T. J. Crowe and other trustees of the Sanitary District drainage board received nine bids on the proposed north branch sewage pumping station, to be built at Lawrence avenue and the North Shore channel, construction of which will bring a triple benefit to Chicago's north side and north subur- ban district. By replacing the present antiquated Lawrence avenue pumping station, ac- cording to President Crowe, the new unit will release valuable business property, remove the smoke nuisance arising from operation of the old steam unit, and will materially im- prove flood relief throughout Chicago's northern district adjacent to Lake Michigan. The new plant, costing approximate- ly $2,000,000, is to be electrically driven in accordance with the recommenda- tions of the board of twenty-eight of the nation's most prominent engineers, who made a survey of Chicago's sani- tary needs preceding the issuance of the federal permit under which Chi- cago flows water from Lake Michigan. Contract for the construction work probably will be awarded at the next meeting of the board. With a capacity of 800,000,000 gallons a day, the new station will perform the additional task of pumping storm water into the North branch of the Chicago river at Lawrence avenue.
