Dolores Costello plays the part of a Spanish heiress who is kidnapped by a half-caste boss of San Francisco's underworld, and goes through weird experiences and horrors which all terminate with the furious onslaught of nature and the Great Fire which relegates "the mile of hell' to oblivion. Warner Oland, the celebrated char- acter actor is featured in support of Miss Costello. The photography is startling in its revelation of what may be done with the sensitive lens and the direction of Alan Crosland adds new honors to his already famous name. It will be presented at the Village theater on Monday and Tues- day. Based on French Play Pauline Frederick is with us again, this time as the mother in a photoplay entitled "The Nest" showing on Wed- nesday and Thursday. It reveals her as the same brilliant actress she always has been; more mellow, more under- standing, more spirited even. The primary role in "The Nest" is that of the mother who would shield her children, a boy and a girl, against the stings of the world. So protecting is she, and thereby so indulgent, that they grow up to be exceedingly selfish, rebellious children who threaten their own and their mother's happiness. Driven to desperation, she resolves by a bold stroke to regain her ascen- dancy and she does it by going to Paris and making herself young again, both in spirit, emotion and appearance. She comes home to be the belle of the cabarets, evolving envy in the bosom of the ne'er-do-well young woman of whom her son has become enamored, a spirit of jealousy. The mother wins back her children and wins in addition the love of a very splendid man who had sought her ever since her husband died. It is a powerfully dramatic, an emo- tionally appealing, a brilliantly acted motion picture, based on the French play by the same name. "Topsy and Eva" The romantic glamor of the old South, with happy Negro slaves; a cruel Simon Legree defeated and the incomparable Duncan Sisters--that is the film fare to be presented Friday and Saturday, when "Topsy and Eva" is shown on the screen. The picture is a comedy version of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," the novel and play that historians credit with influ- encing the Civil War. But how diff- erent! The celluloid story is so given up to humorous situations and the buffooneries of Rosetta and Vivian Duncan that the source is almost for- gotten. - Rosetta Duncan is seen as the black- faced little slave girl, "Topsy," while her sister impersonates the saccharine and doll-like "Eva." Gibson Gowland, star of Eric Von Stroheim's "Greed," plays the part of the money lender, "Simon Legree"; Noble Johnson is "Uncle Tom." The rest of the cast includes Marjorie Daw, Nils Asther, latest "find" of Director Mauritz Stiller, Myrtle Ferguson and Henry Victor. Cadet life, "Dress Parade," opening Sunday at the Norshore thea- ter, which was filmed at the West Point Military Academy, under the direction of Donald Crisp, brings to the screen a true interpretation of the spirit of West Point. All oi the scenes were filmed on the exact locations outlined in the story. Many of the historical points on the reservation were used in the filming of this splendid Pathe-DeMille Special. The room in the barracks that Wil- liam Boyd used in the picture was the same room used by General Pershing when he was a cadet at the academy. The regular "Saturday Night Cadet Hop" was photographed in Cullum hall. The fight sequence between William Boyd, star, and Hugh Allan, was filmed on Fort Putnam, the highest point 02 the reservation and where all differ- ences among the cadets are settled. One of the most important and in- teresting scenes of the film was taken within the walls of the Cadet chapel. This was the first time that a movie camera had ever invaded the sacred walls and perhaps will be the last. Other scenes were taken on the parade grotinds; in Mess hall; in the various cadet barracks, and Administration buildings at the academy. Al Kvale and his Jazz Collegians will be assisted by a large cast in "All Aboard," next week's jazz show at the Norshore theater. Bob LaSalle, a favorite among north siders, will head the cast. "The Bugle Call" VILLAGE REDUCES PRICES A reduction in admission prices for both afternoon and evening perform- ances was announced by Manager J.B. Koppel of the Village theater this week. The change became effective last Mon- day. Comedy-Dramas Listed on Community House Program The two pictures scheduled for ap- pearance during the coming week at the Community House in Winnetka are the "Rejuvenation of Aunt Mary" and "Tell It to Sweeney." "The Rejuvenation of Aunt Mary" is a comedy-drama featuring Harrison Ford and Phillis Haver. It has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 13. "Tell It to Sweeney," the picture chosen for Friday, December 16, pre- sents George Bancroft and Chester Conklin in the title roles. Needless to say--it is a comedy; and a good one.
