40 WINNETKA TALK December 17, 1927 North Shore Art League Announces Its A League Exhibit to Offer Stuart Purchase Prize By JEAN TEN BROECK That band of clever artists and de- votees of art, members of the North Shore Art league, are anticipating with pleasure the annual exhibit of the league, which the public again may share, in its locale, Matz hall, Community House, Winnetka, * Artists are putting the finishing touches on new canvases and selecting their pre- vious works preparatory to this yearly delightful display opening the evening of Wednesday, January 12, with a reception at 8 o'clock, which will in- clude music and refreshments, Excitement and intense interest are current among the league artists, an informant tells us, over the offer this year of a purchase prize by William H. Stuart, to be known as the Loraine Miller Stuart Purchase prize. The .league's purpose in presenting the prize is to stimulate the popularization of the purchase of pictures, and it is happy in its announcement of this first offer. Members of the Art League board, of which James Cady Ewell of Ravinia is president, are in charge of the ex- hibit, about which more will be dis- closed next week. Artists intending to exhibit their canvases are asked to send them to Matz hall on or before January 6, and to state whether or not they desire to compete for the Loraine Miller Stuart prize. New Year's Hosts Again The Leonards are giving their an- nual New Year's party on ganuary 2, this year, at their home, Bryant avenue, Winnetka. Mr. and Mrs. Hib- bard Casselberry are joining with John R. Leonard and his son, David, in the affair this year as usual. The Cassel- berrys arrived yesterday from their home at Winter Park, Fla., to be with Mr. Leonard over the holidays. Miss Harriet Leonard comes home next Fri- day from Radcliffe college, where she is president of the senior class. Nadler, son of Charles Nadler of Chi- cago. The wedding took place Decem- ber 9, in New York City. ¥ Italian Renaissance Mode to Be Keynote of Wedding The Italian Renaissance idea will be carried out in the wedding on De- cember of Miss Mary Louise Worthington of Glencoe to Alfredo Mazzarella of New York City and Capri, Italy. The bridesmaids' cos- tumes will be in the style of that time, and the decorations at the Worthington home, 1016 Forest avenue, where a reception will follow the ceremony, are to be of the same period. The large bridal dinner, which will probably be given the evening before the wedding, also will be Italian. Mr. Mazzarella's best man will be Maj. James Belton of New York City, and his list of ushers includes Arthur Wellesley-Colley and Spencer Libby of Evanston, J. Keith Davis of Riverside, and Roger Heylin of Chicago. Miss Jule Lester's luncheon and hosiery shower for Miss Worthington was given Thursday at the Illinois Women's Athletic club. Fete Country Day Group A dancing club made up mostly of young people in the tenth grade at the North Shore. Country Day school is being feted at a large number of par- ties during the holidays. Allen Ferry, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Montague Ferry, entertained the group at a din- ner and dance last Saturday at his parents' home, 504 Ash street. Tues- day, December 27, Mrs. Spaulding Cof- fin of 33 Locust road, will be hostess to the group at a dinner dance given in honor of her daughter, Elinor. December 29, these same young people will go to the James Prindiville home 717 Rosewood avenue, for dinner, and then on to the Dudley C. Palmers', 655 Elm street, for dancing. Dance Hosts at Shawnee A group of nine New Trier boys has issued invitations for a dance on De- ember 28, at Shawnee Country club. About 600 invitations were sent out. The hosts are: Robert Cochran, Frank Gilchrist, Henry Huttman, John Iliff, Wallace Miller, George Pattison, Thomas Sellery, Stanley Smith, and Raymond Sullivan. : To Be Luncheon Hostess Miss Lois Truesdale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Truesdale, 570 Arbor Vitae road, Winnetka, will be hostess to a group of her friends at a luncheon to be given at her home December 21. There will be bridge in the afternoon. Miss Truesdale is attending Lake Forest college this year. Give Dance Next Thursday The Harry L. Streets' Christmas dance for their daughter, Marjorie, will be given next Thursday evening at their home, 592 Sheridan road. Pre- ceding the dance Miss Mary Cushman will give a dinner at her home, 779 Bryant avenue. Dinner to Precede Dance Miss Dorothy Gerhard, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. E. Ashley Gerhard, will have a dinner party at her home, 482 Linden avenue, Winnetka, Mon- day evening, preceding the dance to be given at Indian Hill for Miss. Anna Howe and Miss Janet Page. Guest of Honor at Dance Miss Leila Withers will be the guest of honor at a tea dance to be given from 4 to 7 on December 28, at Indian Hill club. The dance is given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Allen L. Withers of 788 Lincoln avenue, and will be for the boarding school and college crowd. To Carol Around Living Trees at Indian Hill One of the lovliest Christmas cus- toms in the village is the children's party at -Indian Hill club, which will be given this year on December 22, At 5 o'clock the children will gather around the three evergreens outdoors, to sing carols. These trees, as well as the large Christmas tree in the dining room of the club will be decked all in white, white lights, crystal icicles, and white decorations. The musicians will be dressed as old English carolers. After the carol-singing, the children will have their dinner in the dining room, while their parents have tea in the grill room, Small Dinners to Precede ; Dance for Two Winnetkans Many small dinner parties are being given preceding the dance to be given at Indian Hill for Miss Janet Page and Miss Anna Howe, next Monday eve- ning. Mrs. William S. Elliott will have twelve dinner guests at her home, 650 Blackthorn road. Mrs. Harry C. Ed- monds of 670 Blackthorn road will entertain eight guests, and Miss Doro- thy Gerhard of 482 Linden avenue and Miss Virginia Lamson of 940 Sheridan road are also to have dinner guests before the dance. Plan Progressive Dinner A group of about forty children from Country Day school, New Trier, and Skokie school, who form Miss Carswell"s dancing class, will have a progressive dinner and dance in Win- netka the evening of December 27. Mrs. John R. Cochran and Mrs. Warn- er Robinson will serve the first course at Mrs. Cochran's home, 370 Chestnut street. The party will go to the Harry C. Edmonds', 670 Blackthorn road, for dessert, and then on to the Chester Sargent home, 555 Sheridan road, for dancing. Tea for Bride and Groom Mrs. Enos M. Barton of 978 Euclid avenue, Winnetka, is giving a large reception on December 30, at the Fort- nightly, for her son and his bride, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Sterling Barton of 5747 Blackstone avenue. Mrs. Mal- colm Barton, before her marriage in July, was Miss Andreina Materassi of Florence, Italy, She was a concert pianist of note, and made her deBut here last year. To Entertain for Daughter Mrs. Frederick C. Honnold of 457 Ash street, Winnetka, is giving a luncheon and matinee party for her daughter, Virginia, on December 28. The guests will include about twenty of Virginia's classmates at the North Shore Country Day school. After luncheon at the Drake, Mrs. Honnold will take her guests to see Fred Stone in "Criss Cross." To Give Dinner Dance Miss Roslyn Sincere, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sincere of Beach road, Glencoe will entertain a number of her friends at a dinner dance at the Edgewater Beach hotel on Friday evening, December 23. Supper Dance for Sons Mr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Clarke of 573 Grove street, Glencoe have issued invitations for a supper dance on New Year's eve for their two sons, Donald and Woods. The affair will be given in the Clarke residence. The Skokie circle will have no meet- ing in December. The January meet- ing will be duly announced later. ial Exlibic Marionette Show at Shawnee Club Set for Next Thursday Boys and girls up to sixth grade, little sons and daughters in families of Shawnee Country club members, will be guests of the club at a party and marionette show Thursday after- noon, December 22, at 2:30 o'clock. The Alfred Stury Marionettes, favor- ites of children along the north shore, will give "Sleeping Beauty," and the committee in charge of affairs prom- ises additional attraction for the chil- dren who are being permitted to invite guests. : The show, which originally was scheduled for Friday, but was moved ahead 'a day because of a change in plans, 'will be given in the ballroom. Refreshments will be served. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Ludwig head the commit- tee in charge of the afternoon's enter- tainment, and they are to be assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Gullickson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Kidd, Mr. and Mrs. I. Albert Stewart, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Farrar. Friday evening, December 23, chil- dren in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are to be guests at a Christmas dancing party. They may invite their "crowds," and the club is to be theirs for tlie evening. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Dubbs, chairmen of the committee in charge of these plans, have working with them, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Briggs, Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. McKay, Mr. and Mrs. M. James M. Krafthefer, and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Brashears. This committee is arranging for dancing and refreshments for its young guests, and hopes to compensate them for the cancellation of the boys' and girls' Hallowe'en party made neces- sary at that time by illness in the village. Clubs Open Winter Season With the approaching holiday season comes the announcement of winter festivities at the country clubs. Din- ners, bridge parties and dances will be prominent social events for Decem- ber. Skokie and Indian Hill started the affairs last Saturday evening. A dinner and bridge party was held at Skokie, while the Indian Hill Country club opened the season with a dance. Later' events at Skokie include a holiday 'dinner dance announced for Christmas eve. Indian Hill members are invited to a New Year's eve dinner and dance at which the music will be furnished by Cope Harvey's orchestra. To Give Welfare Benefit Two noted artists world, Claire Dux, soprano, and Al- bert Spalding, violinist, are to give the program. on January 6, at the Audi- torium, that will benefit all centers of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. Further detailed announcement will be made next week. Bridge Luncheon Hostess Miss Doris Ferry, daughter of the A. Montague Ferrys of 504 Ash street, Winnetka, will entertain about thirty- five guests for luncheon and bridge December 20. The guests will be other seniors at the North Shore Country Day school and girls who are home from school for the holidays.
