January 7, 1928 WINNETKA TALK COMMUNITY HOUSE LISTS FULL ACTIVITY SCHEDULE Holiday Lull Over and Groups Using Center Lay Plans for New Year's Events (Contributed) Activities in Community House are once more underway after a holiday lull, and the coming week will find the regular classes and group activities in full swing. Some of the groups have already begun work. So eagerly do the women of the Monday and Thurs- day morning gymnasium class enjoy this work, that it has been meeting during the holiday week. Harry P. Clarke is the instructor. The regular afternoon and evening gymnasium classes will resume their work this week. Many Winnetka resi- dents are availing themselves of the instruction offered in these gym class- es--either for themselves or some member of their family. This is the time for those who are not at present enrolled as members to register. For a small membership fee, the oppor- tunities offered for healthful recreation are very great. Excellent Instructors There are no finer instructors o their respective fields of work than will be found in the leaders of these classes in Community House. Harry P. Clarke, Mrs. Edgar Dale, Miss Jose- phine Starr, and Magnus Martin of the gymnasium classes, and Miss Margaret Carswell of the dancing classes, are all experienced in their work and are successful and inspirational leaders. All village residents who have taken out memberships in Community House are privileged to enter any of these classes. It is Community House's pur- pose to serve the community in this way by offering the best in wholesome recreation and "activity, under fine supervision, and to put it within the financial reach of all. The club of young women known as "Friendship Circle" will meet with Miss Josephine Starr, their leader, as usual, Tuesday evening, Jan. 10, at 8:30 in the Neighborhood Room of. Community House. Membership in this group is open to all young women working in Winnetka homes. Its pur- pose is purely social and recreational. No one could see this group at play in the gymnasium, or busy with its club activities, following the play hour, and not realize just what such an opportunity means to these young women. In addition to their play hour in the gymnasium, they have their planned programs in their club room and there is something of special in- terest and delight to which they al- ways look forward. This group meets regularly each Tuesday evening at 8:30. Any girl is welcome to come. The only fee is a membership fee in Community House. The Business Girls' club will hold its regular meeting each Tuesday eve- ning at 8:30 in the Philip Sidney Post room, following the gymnasium class at 7:30. Most interesting plans are afoot for this group for the balance of the year. The English classes for Foreigners will resume work on Monday evening, Tanuary 9. Classes in beginning work and for intermediate and advanced students will be held each Monday and Tuesday evenings, under the compe- tent instruction of Miss Livia Young- ~uist, and Miss Mabel Ducker and Miss Millicent Anderson of the Win- netka Public schools. Boy Scouts Active Boy Scout and Camp Fire activities are in full swing--the girls meeting Thursday afternoons, and the boys Thursday evenings. (younger boys) under "Chief" Davies, and "The Panthers" boys' club are meeting as usual. The Blue-Birds "The Pathfinders" _ ---- (younger Camp Fire Girls) meet Fri- day afternoons. Many of the organizations which use Community House regularly are planning meetings in the near future. The League of Women Voters holds its monthly luncheon and meeting Monday, January 9. © The Winnetka Congregational Church Annual Din- ner is to be January 18. To those in the village who do not vet know Community House and its work, a special invitation is given to come and get acquainted. The influ- ence of this unique institution is so interwoven with the life of Winnetka, that it will 'help to a better under- standing of the village if its work is realized as fully as possible. In order to understand it more thoroughly, however, it is necessary to come more than once. It serves in so many channels that only a partial glimpse is obtained unless one comes fre- quently, and at different times of the day.
