Many players make the mistake of trying to hit the ball too hard. I do not mean to say that the ball is not hit hard, but it must be done properly. It is very easy to use your shoulder and back too much when trying for distance. Naturally, it feels as though you are hitting the ball very hard when you grit your teeth, tense your mus- cles and slam it. In reality, however. when you do this, you slow up your swing, and speed in the club-head is what makes the ball go, not muscular strength. That is why so many times people have surprised themselves by swing- ing carelessly at the ball and seeing it travel a long distance.
