Clinic Will Diagnose Ills of Prep Journalism A free clinic for the diagnosing of ills of high school publications and the pooling of the experience of Chicago and suburban journalism _ teachers, supervisors and students in solving them, is announced by the Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern university. Five sessions, with experts present to answer knotty questions, are planned for the remainder = of the school year, according to Assistant Prof. Leland D. Case, who is in charge of the clinic. Meetings will be held Saturday mornings, at Wieboldt hall, McKin- lock campus, Chicago (Chicago ave- nue at the lake), so as to permit teachers and students from the distant suburbs to attend. Four dates and topics have been announced: February 18, "Getting and Editing News for the High School Paper"; March 17, "Business Problems of the High School Paper": April 21, "The High School Magazine"; May 12, the High School Yearbook." : A fifth session will probably be held on the Evanston campus, with Sigma Delta Chi and Theta Sigma Phi, pro- fessional journalistic societies, in charge of the program. _ A new two-hour course in journai- ism for high school teachers and supervisors is being offered at Ev- anston this year by the Medill School in conjunction with the School of Education. Members of this class will attend the clinic in Chicago, and do actual newswriting, editing and mak- ing up of papers as laboratory work. Textbooks will be replaced by the "Scholastic Editor," and "Quill and Scroll," monthly magazines devoted to high school journalistic interests. Ac- tual copies of high school papers, magazines and yearbooks will supply fodder" and inspiration for class dis- cussions. This course has been organized in response to a demand from high school English teachers who have been called upon to direct school pub- lications with no previous journalistic experience. It is not in sympathy with professional journalistic training for high school students, but is de- siened to emphasize good journalistic writing as the modern style for effec- tive, clear English. Pine Street Circle Plans Unique Party The Pine Street circle will be en- tertained at the home of Mrs. A. F. Mecklenburger, 985 Spruce street, Fri- day, February 10, at 2 o'clock. Assist- ing the hostess will be Mrs. Daniel Katz and Mrs. James Scheiner. Mrs. John Marshall will give a group of old-time "darky" readings in cos- tume. A feature of the program is that each member or guest is invited to bring a family heirloom or antiaue of interest and make a few entertain- ing remarks about it. Many of the members will dress in old fashioned garb. The hostesses, too, will be in costume. Carlton Brady of Lake Park, Towa, arrived in Winnetka Sunday evening, January 29, to spend a few days visit- ing his mother, Mrs. Emma Brady, and sister, Mrs. Mildred B. Mershon, of 511 Willow road.
