February 11, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 39 Elect Western Vice-President of Nat'l Rose Society Illinois is now officially represented by the American Rose society. This organization is composed of several thousand growers of the Queen of flowers. A large percentage of the members are located in the eastern states, but several middle west and pacific coast states are represented by a few members each. The purpose of the organization is to study and test many varieties of roses and their adap- tability to various sections of the coun- try; to ascertain those varieties which are most prolific in their blooms; to improve cultural methods and to ef- fectively fight insect enemies. John Western, founder and manager of North Shore cemetery, was re- cently elected vice-president of the American Rose Society for Illinois. Some of the duties of this office are to encourage the establishment of rose societies in various communities, to help amateur growers in selecting de- sirable varieties and in giving them the right care; to inform amateur grow- ers where they may see private as well as public rose gardens as examples of the results of proper methods as well as for their personal pleasure. Mr. and Mrs. Western attended the last annual meeting of the American Rose society, which was held last Sep- tember at the famous country home of Pierre S. du Pont, located about forty miles from Philadelphia on the road to Baltimore. The society is composed largely of growers of roses out-of-doors and not for sale. North Shore cemetery is rapidly becoming famous as the only cemetery in Amer- ica which grows roses in large num- bers. The other landscape features of Lake County's arboretum have been well known far and wide for several years and now comes nation-wide recognition of the rose growing fea ture. Information comes from Wr. West- ern that only Hybrid Tea roses give continuous blooms from June until late October. Hundreds of these exqui- site roses may be seen in all stages of development any summer day at the big show place on the Green Bay road. From the same source comes the in- teresting statement that a few admirers of the rose in various parts of the country actually kept tab on the num- ber of blooms produced by each bush during the summer, and that it has been proven that single bushes only 15 to 20 inches tall and from 2 to 3 years old have produced, right here in the north shore district, from 40 to 60 charming roses in a single season.
