February 25, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 35 Lord's Obtain Rare Collection of Fine Oriental Novelties S. K. Jorjorian, manager of the Ori- ental Rug department at Lord's, Evans- ton, has just returned from the East with a $75,000 private collection of an- tique rugs that formerly belonged to Hadji Meshet Kasum, of Teheran, Persia. The collection is remarkable not only for its unusually distinctive rugs --some of makes rarely found in any group offered for sale at retail--but for numerous ornamental pieces, and cloths. There is, for instance, an antique Jejim horse blanket of the sort used on Arab racing horses. The dulled red stripes exhibit small conventional fig- ures. The black stripes are plain. There is a rare example of a Turk- ish envelope bath bag, with a tasseled border. A bride's bedspread, tightly woven of twisted pure silk, is a miracle of color and design. In its many-colored stripes are scores of religious symbols. A gift of this sort was frequently pre- sented by a bride to her prospective husband, as an example of her skill in weaving. A brilliantly-striped couch cover is woven of tightly-twisted pashim, the soft, fine wool of the young lamb. There is a striped tent drapery, formerly used to separate the women's quarters from the men's, by the Mo- hammedan Arabs. You will see camel's saddlebags, some bordered in a contrasting band, into which is interwoven a gold thread. These are chiefly very fine Bokhara and Beluchistan weaves. And a shepherd's lunch bag, cone- shaped, and woven beautifully of bril- liant colors. The gem of the entire collection is a superb Antique Yezd carpet, woven by the little-known Yezd tribes of Persia who worship in a still different fashion than the Mohammedans and Zoroastrians of Persia. In the Yezd country there were located some of the royal looms upon which were woven, by masters of the craft, huge palace carpets for the Persian Shahs. This particular rug is 26-4 x 16-2 in size. It has the wonderful Herati or Feraghan design characteristics, which were originated by the Timurid Sul- tans, and later adopted by the Seferie Shahs of Persia. The background is of a melting rose tint, with old ivory, soft green and sky blue shadings, giving an effect of old mosaic work. The main wide rose border is in palmette design with a delicate spiral stem, and this has, in turn, seven smaller borders with an Egyptian lotus motif. Lord's are inviting north shore homemakers who are interested in Oriental rugs to see the collection. All but a few of the pieces are for sale. "Mind" was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, Sunday, February 19. The Golden Text was from II Cor. 13:11, "Be perfect, be of good com- fort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you." Among the citations which comprised the Iesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "I beseech you there- fore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sac- rifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" (Romans 12:1, 2). The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Mankind will improve through Science and Christianity. The necessity for uplifting the race is father to the "fact that Mind can do it; for Mind can impart purity instead of im- purity, strength instead of weakness, and health instead of disease" (p. 371).
