Jean Hersholt, the psalm" singing card shark, makes "Alias the Deacon," this Saturday's billing, a film that you can see and sure enjoy. Drama, pathos and comedy are all intermin- gled, touched up with plain human in- terest--what more could be desired? "Doomsday," in which Florence Vidor shows athletic tendencies and Gary Cooper is more than a handsome young man, will be seen on Sunday. The play, based on Warwick Deeping's book of the same name, has a moral but don't let that bother you. It's woven in so neatly that you don't even notice it and the picture is okay --in capitals. Will Rogers does his own "bull- dogging" in the "Texas Steer," which he and the critics both admit is good. Richard Wallace, who made "McFad- den's Flats," directed it--and that adds materially to the "Steer's" pedigree. Two films are offered on Wednes- day, "Woman Wise" and "Love and Learn." In the former, which features June Collyer and Walter Pidgeon, a hard-boiled bachelor is softened. Ann Dere, playing Gertrude Len- nox, makes the strongest bid for ap- proval. Miss Dere, as always, does full justice to her part and demon- strates once again her ability. Not that the other four are below par. Margaret Fuller, the company's leading woman, does fine work as the youthful Doris Bellamy: Karl Way, the director, always one to be counted on for an excellent performance, lives up to his reputation in the part of Philip Lord; Richard Ward makes a fine Victor Staunton and Lew Welsh plays a good Harvey Lennox. Charles George dashes through the play in the part of Gregory Brown with his customary gusto, doing a better job than usual. George Pem- broke and Beatrice Leiblee have minor parts. The plot is well built and the com- edy is fast and furious. Mrs. Len- nox' first husband was supposed to have perished in the San Francisco earthquake but turns up again during the early part of the action as Lord, a successful novelist. Mrs. Lennox had remarried and now had two hus- bands or none or what have you. The love triangle provided by Doris, Gregory and Victor paves the way for a good deal of comedy quite apart from the husbands-wife triangle. The show is hilarious. It is well written and well played. Community House Features "Rough Riders" Friday "Wild Beauty," featuring Rex, the "wonder horse," will be the presenta- tion at Community House next Tues- day. "The Rough Riders," that splen- did film tribute to Theodore Roosevelt and his troop in the Spanish American war, will be featured Friday. In "Wild Beauty," the country of the west furnishes the beautiful and elaborate setting. Rex has a wild horse herd and has to battle for supremacy: win the heart of a Kentucky mare from an Indian pony rival; slay a mountain lion and sacri- fice the free life for his love. The film is excellent. The Camp Fire girls will stage a prologue symbolic of the meaning of Camp Fire in commemoration of the Sixteenth national .birthday of Camp Fire at the evening performance of "The Rough Riders." Mrs. John Marshall, a guardian, is ' directing. The film fare is one of the best of the season's productions. It tells vividly the story it is expected to carry and offers an excellent characterization of Roosevelt. GLENCOE MOVIES "Buttons," a Jackie Coogan feature of unusual interest both to children and grown-ups, will be presented at the Glencoe Union church next Friday.
