March 24, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 21 Wilmette Players to Present "Her Husband's Wife" The Wilmette Players, an amateur dramatic group formerly known as the Baton and Mask, are now at work preparing the play, "Her Husband's Wife," a comedy-drama by Augustus Thomas, for presentation during the latter part of April. A cast for the production is now being selected and will start rehearsal in the very near future. The Wilmette Players were first or- ganized under the auspices of the Wil- mette Dramatic institute, sponsored by the Playground and Recreation board early last fall. They were recently re- organized under the present name and the following officers were elected: Paul E. Gameron, president; Rosaline Mills, vice : president; Edith Ray Young, secretary, and Mrs. George Carrington, treasurer. The board of directors elected at the same time, in addition to the officers who are also members of the board, are Betty Weber, Mabel Renneckar and Fred Borgfelt. Meetings are held on the first Mon- day evening of each month at the Byron Stolp school. There are now about 30 people actively participating in the group, which is growing rapidly, membership being open to any resident of Wilmette. Pantomime and the production of a short play are included in the program for each meeting of the Players, the lines of the latter being read rather than memorized. The Players, it was announced by Mr. Gameron, will be willing to try out plays written by local authors, and later, if feasible, present them publicly. Rice is grown in Illinois in Fulton and Jersey counties. Hold Semi-Finals in Oratorical Contest The semi-finals for the oratorical contest conducted by the second semester class in public speaking at New Trier were held this week. This contest is held each year at this time. Last season Simon Bows of Wilmette was the winner, Fach student commits to memory one oration, works on it in class under the direction of Miss Payton, the pub- lic speaking instructor, and then de- livers it. The semi-finals this week were judged by the students in the classes and Miss Payton. The win- ners of this will compete in the finals to be held at later date. Miss Payton and several others will judge the finals. Among those in the semi-finals were Henry Brooks, Harold Twomey, David Wanger, Jane Didrickson, Winslow Wright, Haden Jones, and Betty Burns. Civic Orchestra Will Give Concert March 25 The Civic orchestra, which functions under the auspices of the Civic Music Association of Chicago and the Orchestral association, will give the third of its Orchestra hall concerts, Sunday afternoon, March 25, at 3:30 o'clock. Frederick Stock, director, and Eric Del.amarter, assistant director, have chosen the following popular program: Overture to "The Water- Carrier," by Cherubini; the Andante and Scherzo from Schubert's C major symphony; Tschaikowsky's Capriccio Italien; Goldmark's overture "Sakun- tala"; "In the Village," from Ippolitow- Ivanew's "Caucasian Sketches"; the "Prize Song" from Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg," and the finale from the same composer's "Das Rheingold."
