April 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK CONGREGATIONAL CHOIRS GIVE CONCERT THURSDAY Combined Choirs to Give Pro- gram Postponed from March 29; to be Held at Matz Hall The combined choirs of the Win- netka Congregational church will give on Thursday evening, at 8:15, in Matz hall, the concert which was to have been given on March 29. The concert will benefit the piano fund of the choir, and tickets may be obtained from any chorister or at the door on Thursday evening. The choir numbers will be sung a cappella for the most part. The regu- lar soloists ot the choir will appear in concert role, each singing a group of solos. The notice is to the effect that the subscribers' checks are now due and payable. Theresis a large wait- ing list, it is explained, and it is therefore imperative that subscrib- ers mail their checks promptly to Mrs. Bessie Grant at the Winnetka State bank, the checks to be made payable to the Winnetka Music club. "Mail your checks today," reads a portion of the notice, "so that you may not lose the opportunity of hearing such splendid artists as Claudia Muzio, Albert Spalding, and Vladimar Horowitz. The other two artists who complete the list for next season will be announced in the very near future." PLAN BOXING BOUTS Boxers from Great Lakes and Fort Sheridan to Compete for Winnetka Square Club : Many members and friends of the Winnetka Square club will recall the boxing exhibitions held on the main floor of the Masonic temple a year or so ago. Announcement is made that there will be another good treat of the same character Tuesday, April 24, at 8 p.m,, when a number of fast bouts between some of the best boxers at Fort Sheridan Post and the Great Lakes Naval Training station will be staged at the temple. There will be bouts in all weights, bantam, light, middle and heavy, under the sanction of the Illinois Boxing commission, it is announced. Tickets may be obtained at Adams pharmacy, Community pharmacy, Hub- bard Woods pharmacy, North Shore pharmacy and from members of the Square club. Charles A. Kinney Talks to Parents' Association "The School Shop and the New Education" was the subject of an ad- dress delivered by Charles A. Kinney, director of Adventure Island Boys' camp before the Parents' association of the Orchard school in Indianapolis Friday evening. Mr. Kinney spent Thursday and Friday of this week at the school for the purpose of advising with the directors and faculty regard- ing a number of important changes to be effected in the school shops. The program on Monday was in | charge of Mrs. Ralph S. Childs, Local Affairs chairman. During the year, through Mrs. Childs, the board has been informed of the work of the council, plan commission, and Village Manager. This meeting was the op- portunity to present to the general membership the plan of government in Winnetka and the problems confront- ing the suburbs of a large city. H. I. Woolhiser, village manager, clearly outlined the Village organiza- tion and explained the question of municipal ownership, particularly as it involved electric light users. Robert Kingery, secretary of the Chicago Regional Plan commission, greatly interested his audience by tell- ing how plans are made for handling the future growth of cities and provid- ing them with adequate parks and playgrounds. Mr. Kingery also shared with the League the plans for the im- provement of the Forest Preserve in Cook county. : Mrs. B. F. Langworthy outlined the plan for the observance of Better Homes Week in Winnetka. During the meeting sample primary ballots were distributed, and Mrs. Edwin E. Brown explained the importance of certain offices on ballots and urged careful study of the ballot before going to the polls. - Mrs. John VanderVries, the retiring president, was presented with a beau- tiful basket of flowers by the board of directors in appreciation of her services. New Trustee Assumes Duties on Committees William B. Moulton, the new mem- ber on the Winnetka Village council in place of D. F. McPherson, retired, has been appointed to the various council committees on which Mr. Mc- Pherson served. The appointment was made at the adjourned meeting of the Council Friday evening of last week, follow- ing. the official canvass of the ballots cast at the recent election and Trus- tee Moulton's induction to office. Trustee Moulton is chairman of both the Judiciary and Police committees and is a member of the Finance com- mittee and Plats and Zoning commit- tee. :
