April 21, 1928 WINNETKA TALK in OFFER ALL-STAR CAST IN "TONS OF MONEY" Theatre Guild Company to Tour North Shore with Comedy Vehicle Next Week Stage settings executed in modern- istic fashion will distinguish the com- ing North Shore Theatre Guild produc- tion, "Tons of Money," from previous plays presented by this popular ama- teur group. There will be Mrs. Laird Bell, of Winnetka, always a popular interpreter of droll, eccentric characters, who scored a remarkable hit in the well re- membered part of Hester, in the Guild's production of Milne's "Ariadne" last year. Mrs. Bell appears fre- quently as a reader on the programs of north shore women's clubs. In the part of Miss Benita Mullett, an in- quisitive maiden lady whose deafness causes no end of misunderstanding, Mrs. Bell will provide much of the spice of the new Guild production. Another experienced Guild player is Julia Hanks Mailer, for three years dramatic coach of the Roycemore School for Girls. Her past Guild suc- cesses include leading parts in "Au- tumn Fire," "Enchanted April," "The Red Robe," "Outward Bound" and "Enchanted Cottage." For over a year, Mrs. Mailer was a member of the Wisconsin Players in Milwaukee, and was very active while at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin: in student produc- tions. In "Tons of Money" she is to play the part of Jean Everard, an impressionable widow with strong romantic tendencies. Faust in Important Kole Also a former member of the Wis- consin Players is Paul Faust, of Ev- anston, who has been for the past year a stock actor at Rockford, Ill. As the crafty butler who is one of the key-characters in the comedy, he will make his first appearance with the Theater Guild. As previously announced, the two leading parts will be taken by Louis Ellsworth Laflin, of Lake Forest, and Mrs. Irene Wicker, of Evanston. These players also have had extensive experi- ence, Mr. Laflin having written, com- posed, directed and acted in two of the Princeton Triangle club's annual musical comedy offerings, and Mrs. Wicker having spent several years in stock, and attended the dramatic school of the Goodman theater. Experts in Character Two members of the cast who need no introduction to north shore audi- ences are William Boyden of Win- netka, and Lloyd Faxon, also of Win- netka. In last year's spectacular Guild production of Shakespeare's "Henry IV," featuring the well known Eng- lish actor, Basil Sydney, Mr. Boyden played the important role of the old king. Mr. Faxon, also an able inter- preter of difficult character parts, again joins the Guild after a two years' ab- sence, his last play being "Plots and Playwrights." Charles Eastman, too, is back with the Guild again, playing one of his in- imitable comedy roles that have made his work so well liked in seasons past. He will be remembered for his spendid acting in "The Detour" last year. All-Star Cast With William Pearce and Edith M. Phillips of Highland Park to complete the cast, "Tons of Money" may be truly said to be an all-star amateur production. Its long run in London, coupled with the fact that it has never een seen in either Chicago or New York, promises that Director David Owen's next offering will be an es- pecial treat. The first performance of "Tons of Money" is set for Glencoe on April 24. Then follow nights in Highland Park, Lake Forest and Winnetka, on April 25, 26, and 27; and in Wilmette and Evanston on May 1, 2 and 3.
