May 5, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 33 New Trier Girl Wins Honors in Poetry Contest Marjorie Braymer, student at New Trier High school, has achieved un- usual honors in the literary division of The Scholastic Awards, annual con- test for high school students, sponsored by The Scholastic, national high school magazine, in which 20,000 students from every state in the country par- ticipated. Miss Braymer was awarded honorable mention in the Witter Bynner Scholastic Poetry contest. An- nouncement of the awards came from Dr. W. M. Davidson, Superintendent of the Pittsburgh Schools and chair- man of the national committee of edu- cators who conducted the contest through The Scholastic. Miss Braymer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest S. Braymer, 1230 Central street, Evanston. The judges of the Witter Bynner Scholastic Poetry Contest were Witter Bynner, poet; Orton Lowe, Pennsyl- vania State College; Hugh Mearns, novelist, author of "Creative Youth"; and Charles Swain Thomas, Professor of English, Harvard Graduate School of Education. The purpose of The Scholastic Awards is to promote and stimulate the development of Pictorial and Graphic Arts, and literature and drama among high school students. This year $3,000 in prizes was awarded to students in various high schools in the different divisions of the Awards. Miss Braymer's prize-winning cofi- tribution follows: December Rain I should rather feel the sting Of tiny needle-points of hail Than gentle rain. I'd rather fling My hair and let the north wind flail It than soft fingertips of rain Caress me. Is there nothing right? I'd rather bear sharp jabs of pain Than tender spring rain, lovely, light. --Marjorie Braymer, (New Trier High School, Miss Elizabeth Stanwood, Teacher) Sorority Scholarship is Lower; Still Ahead of Men Northwestern University sorority co- eds have this year failed to keep up the brilliant scholarship record estab- lished last year, but still are far ahead of the men, reports for the first sem- ester of the current year, issued this week by Miss Katherine George, regis- trar, show. The high average reached last spring by the co-eds was 1.6123 out of a possible 3.0 points. This year, how- ever, the average sagged to 1.4625. The fraternity men of the campus average only 1.1343, being slightly bested by the non-fraternity men who maintained an average of 1.2313. Zeta Tau Alpha leads the sorority list for scholarship with an average of 1.8262. The next five in order are Aokiga, 1.7343; Alpha Gamma Delta, 1.6522; Alpha Chi Omega, 1.6365; Kappa Sigma Tau, 1.5873; Alpha Phi, 1.5823. Confiscate Millions in Chicago Taxes Annually From 28 to 30 millions of dollars are taken from taxpayers in Chicago each year by a process of confisca- tion through over-assessment of prop- erty, Prof. H. D. Simpson, of the in- stitute for research in land economics at Northwestern university, declared this week after extensive studies of real estate assessment in Chicago. The extreme inequalities in assessments indicate, he said, that the board of review has failed completely to func- tion as a board for equalizing the assessment of property in Chicago.
