May 12, 1928 WINNETKA TALK New Trier Runners Count 10 Points in Marquette Relays Eight New Trierites managed to carry off 10 points in the Marquette Relays, held at Milwaukee last Satur- day. Dave Wanger made over half the points. He won the broad jump with a leap of 21 feet 37% inches and was on the mile relay team that tied with Milwaukee East for second place. The four-mile team wasn't able to keep the first place won by New Trier last year, but they did very well con- sidering that the winners, Milwaukee East High, cut eight seconds off the meet record made by last year's Gray and Green team. Ted Burgess ran especially well. He took the baton from Ferrman, who started for New Trier, in third place, passed the two in front of him and passed a big lead to Steve Windes. Steve held the lead and Iliff kept the Gray and Green in front until the homestretch where Mil- waukee's anchor man passed him. A team of Canadians from Hamil- ton, Ontario, won the mile relay in the fast time of 3 minutes, 28 2-10 seconds, which broke the meet record set by the same team last year. Cas- sell came from behind to put New Trier in second place for the first quarter. Wanger, Hoffman and Guy held second, although the runner from Milwaukee East High nearly passed Guy and managed to tie him. This section was also well . repre- sented by North Shore Country Day School, which captured 9 points in the private school division. Wells got second in both the high and broad jump for Country Day and Fowle won second place in the discus. North Shore Girls to Take Part in Pageant Several north shore girls have been selected to take part in the annual Tree Day pageant on June 2 at Wellesley college. These are Jean MacLeish of Glencoe, Eleanor Bear of Evanston, Jean Markley of Win- netka, Elizabeth Read of Lake Forest and Gladys White of Wilmette. Tree Day is Wellesley's oldest cele- bration, the first being held in 1877. The spade used in turning up the ground is a time honorad instrument Hhich has on it the numerals of each class. TO GIVE LUNCHEON The Junior Sisterhood of the Temple Israel will give a mother and daughter luncheon Saturday, May 12; at. 1 oclock, in the Temple recreation rooms at Lincoln and Vernon avenues, Glencoe. The very clever and original invitations were designed by Olive Hirsch. The program will be furnished by members of the Junior sisters in charge of Eleanore Klein. Dorothy Kinstler is chairman of the Junior or- ganization. WELLESLEY GROUP TO MEET The annual meeting of the North Shore Wellesley circle will take place at 2:30 o'clock, Tuesday, May 15, at the home of Mrs. M. I. Wagner, 2305 Lindenwood drive, Evanston, at 2:30 o'clock. Mrs. L. J. Lawson and Mrs. Ward V. Evans will be co-hostesses. While Rod LaRocque and Vilma Banky vehemently deny that they are entertaining any notions of scuttling the matrimonial barque, folks are still insisting that's their intentions. What would you do in a case like that? Tell "folks" to go sit on an iceberg or please them and take to the life-boats. --_--0-- Billy Dove's latest will be seen at the Chicago beginning Monday May 21. It is a story of Hungary and has an exceptional cast. More I dunno. Chicago Illinae Club Gives Annual Spring Luncheon The Chicago Illinae club, of which Mrs. Charles H. Dennis of Evanston is president, held its annual spring luncheon Saturday afternoon in the north ballroom of the Stevens hotel. Ickes of Hubbard Woods, a member of the board of trustees, and Miss Maria ILecnard, dean of women at the University of Illinois, were guests of honor at the lunch- eon. Following this Anita Willets Burnham of Winnetka gave an ac- count of her recent sketching trip abroad with her family. They plan to leave soon for China to sketch the country there. Mrs. G. W. Karraker of Evanston is corresponding secretary of the club. Mrs. L. D. Lloyd of Evanston is a member of the board. Members and their guests were invited to attend the luncheon.
