36 WINNETKA TALK May 19, 1928 Woman's Golf and Bridge Season Opening on North Shore Committees Chosen for Women's Days at Country Clubs By JEAN TEN BROECK Golf and bridge luncheons are wo- men's own activities at north shore golf clubs and each year assume a larger share in golf club activity. While this activity still is another unfailing harbinger of summer on the north shore, we notice this season that it is commencing earlier than usual, and in spite of the coldness of spring. Committees already are chosen and some of the plans are made quite definitely, although we have been un- able to communicate with all the chair- men of these events to ascertain those who are working with them. Mrs. W. H. Mushlet of Wilmette, with a committee composed of Mrs. D. T. Adams, Mrs. W. Brodkorb, Mrs. H. C. Chapin, Mrs. Z. Harston, Mrs. W. H. Montgomery, Mrs. H. G. Swi- gart, and Mrs. €. R. Naylor, is in charge of Ladies' day at Westmore- land, which opens Friday, June 1, for a busy golf season. Mrs. J. D. Harper of Evanston is in charge of arrange- ments for the luncheon and bridge events which commence a little later on. North Shore Golf club already open- ed its golf events for women Tuesday of this week with medal play and full handicap, thus making a departure from the Friday golf events for women that have been customary. The day will continue to be Tuesday throughout the summer. Among the plans for the season ending September 21, will be an open meeting the first Tuesday of each month. Other announcements concerning the Tuesday events appear elsewhere in this issue. Mrs. C Driver heads the golf committee, with her assistants, Mrs. R. J. Fillingham, Mrs. W. D. Fowler, Mrs. eorge Richards, Mrs. George D. Wolf, Mrs. Richard Wolfe and Mrs, Craig Ketch- am. Mrs. George Wolf has been ap- pointed captain of the North Shore Golf team for this year. Mrs. O. G. Corns of Wilmette is chairman for the bridge days which commence Wednes- day, June 6 Play started for women at the Wil- mette Golf club Tuesday of last week, but the first scheduled event occurs the first Tuesday in June, when players will qualify for the June tournament. It will be open day. Mrs. Fred Otte, Jr., of Evanston, is chairman of the woman's golf and her committee in- cludes Mrs. John Arends of Evanston, Mrs. F. Jones of Park Ridge, and Mrs. Thomas McLaren of Wilmette. Bridge days at Wilmette club will open Saturday, June 2, to continue each Saturday during the month. Luncheon will be served the second and fourth Saturdays until the end of August, with the second Saturday piv- ot day, and the fourth, partners day. One large bridge luncheon will be given in September, according to present plans. Mrs. Harry Herb of Evanston is chairman for these events, with a committee of Mrs. Edward Richardson and Mrs. Goodman Wilson. The first women's golf day at Indian Hill Country club will be held next Wednesday. Mrs. Charles A. Matz of Winnetka is chairman with Mrs. Harry Tennev. also of Winnetka, co-chair- man. The other members of the com- mittee are Mrs. Gilbert Scribner, Mrs. Darrell Bovd, Mrs. Hobart Young, all of Winnetka, Mrs. Grant Rideewayv of Kenilworth, and Mrs. Carroll Kendrick, Winnetka, who will be team captain. The women's golf days at Sunset Rid~e will not start quite as early as at the other north shore clubs this vear, Tuesday, Tune 5, will be the first regular day. Mrs. Arthur T. The following day Mrs. Granville Revere Lewis of Evanston was hostess at another miscellaneous shower. Thursday Mr. Higbee's mother, Mrs. EE, John W. H. Higbee of 810 Lake ave- nue, gave a luncheon and shower. Miss Virginia Belt will be hostess at a shower at the Skokie Country club May 23, and the following Tuesday, Miss Margaret Nielson will entertain at a miscellaneous shower at the Edge- water Beach hotel. Arms of Evanston is chairman for bridge days. Mrs. Robert G. McKay of Wilmette is chairman this vear for the women's card parties at Illinois Golf club. Her committee is composed of Mrs. Evald Raedel of Chicago, Mrs. Sawver Smith, Glencoe, and Mrs. Arthur Hammond, Wilmette. The first card party will be held on Decoration day and after that the parties will be held every Saturdav throughout the summer. Pope-Fentress Wedding to Take Place June 11 The wedding of Miss Celeste Pope and Thomas Lyon Fentress, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Fentress of 939 Green Bay road, Hubbard Woods, will take place June 11, in Washington, D. C., where Miss Pope's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis E. Pope, reside. The service will be read at 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon before members of the families The bride will be unattended and Calvin Fentress, Jr., will act as his brother's best man. After their wedding trip, Mr. Fen- tress and his bride will spend the summer in Gloucester, Mass. Circle Notes The Ash Street circle will hold its annual May Party and dinner next Tuesday, May 22, at the Hearthstone Tea Room in Hubbard Woods. After dinner the members attending will go to the Community House where they will be entertained. The Ridge Avenue circle will hold the last party of its season Monday, May 21, at 2 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. Arthur Henning, 458 Linden ave- nue. Each member is asked to bring three "white elephants" with her to the party. Saturday evening, May 19, Miss Anna Catherine Hurd and Miss Jean Logan will be hostesses at a theater party followed by a supper dance at the Drake. Miss Winifred Smith will entertain at a dinner and bridge at her home in Chicago Mon- day evening, May 21, and the follow- ing evening Miss Edwina Litsinger will give a similar affair at her home. Mr. and Mrs. Jacoby will give the bridal dinner, a dinner dance at the Union League club, Thursday evening, May 24. Entertain Newcomers Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Larrabee have come on from Massachusetts and have rented the Burnham log cabin at 1407 Tower road for a two year period. Mrs. Larrabee, who was Miss Peggy Smith, made many Chicago and north shore friends when she attended Farmington. Give Tea for General General and Mrs. Abel Davis of 600 Sheridan road, Glencoe, entertained at a tea last Tuesday in honor of General Sanelli of Rome. General Sanglli is head of the Sidac, which is an inter- national alliance of the national le- gions, as the American legion, the British legion, and others. Many generals were among the guests.
