48 WINNETKA TALK May 19, 1928 T wentieth North Shore Music Festival Opens Monday Soloists, Choruses, Chicago's Symphony Will Feature Week The stellar event of the musical season, the North Shore Music festival, will engage the attention of the com- munity next week. It begins the 20th spring season with the concert Monday evening, and closes with the customary Saturday afternoon children's matinee and Sat- urday evening concert. The North- western university gymnasium will be given over to this event. Following the custom of other years, the interior of the great auditorium will be hung with baskets and garlands of flowers. The mixed chorus of 600 singers will again occupy the stage, together with members of the A Cappella choir and the male chorus, new this season, of a thousand mem- bers. Saturday the children will take their places on the tiers of singers' seats that rise at the rear of the orchestra and soloist platform, and, in the vast spaces of the immense con- cert room, thousands of Evanstonians, north shore townsfolk and festival patrons who come long distances every season will fill every available space for the music's enjoyment. Ranks at the Top The North Shore festival ranks among the supreme music festivals of the country, Fach year its program is planned to offer variety by way of innovations in chorus arrangements, combinations of artists and numbers. Among these innovations this season will be the presence on the program for the opening concert of a quartet of north shore artists. These singers will include Isabel Richardson Molter, soprano; Alvene Resseguie, contralto; Eugene F. Dressler, tenor, and Rollin M. Pease, bass. Many Notable Artists A second high spot will be the appearance for the first time in the Middle West of Dorothy Speare, who since being graduated from Smith college has achieved success as a novelist and then as an opera. singer. Claire Dux, who has sung in all the important opera houses of the world, will also be an artist star, and Jacques Gordon, concert-meister of the Chicago symphony orchestra, a violinist of sur- passing skill, will also appear as solo- ist. The United German Male choruses of Chicago will make up the men's chorus ensemble to feature Thursday evening's program, supple- mented by 200 local men singers. A singing of the Manzoni Requiem Mass of Verdi will be a program innovation. Marguerite D'Alvarez and Lawrence Tibbett of the Metropolitan Opera company, the latter making his fourth consecutive festival appearance, Rich- ard Crooks and Florence Macbeth will be the other artists. Large Chorus of Children The children's programs of Saturday afternoon are among the pleasantest features of festival week with the recurring seasons. Under the direction of Prof. John W. Beattie, director of the department of music in the Evans- ton public schools, a children's chorus of 1,500 voices will sing the prelude to "Konigskinder" by Humperdinck, and several groups of children's songs. The soloist will be Florence Macbeth, a delightful accompaniment to the children's numbers. A feature of the Saturday evening program will be the closing number, the singing of the great "Hallelujah" chorus from "The Messiah" by Handel. Northwestern gymnasium gives an impressive setting for the music festival.
