June 9, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 65 Shore Theaters News PO a tI) "The Crowd" Is Varsity Feature Early Next Week "The Crowd," Metro - Goldwyn- Mayer picture, which has been called a "high spot in movie making" and which was listed by Photoplay as one of the six best pictures during the month of December, is on the Var- sity theater's bill for next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It is the story of the struggles of a white-collar man and his wife in a big city. "Truth- fully and beautifully told by King Vidor and sympathetically acted by James Murray and Eleanor Board- man," say the critics. The Varsity showing for tomorrow is "13 Washington Square," a mystery- comedy starring Alice Joyce and Jean Hersholt. It is from the famous play by Leroy Scott and was prepared for the screen by Harry O. Hoyt, one of the greatest of Hollywood's comedy scenarists. Charles Murray will do his stuff in "Vamping Venus," to be shown at the Varsity next Thursday and Friday. In this picture a Sennett comedian is turned loose in a comedy nightmare of ancient Greece, falling over tele- phones, radios, motorcycles, and other twentieth century appurtenances. Thel- ma Todd is beautiful and Charlie Mur- ray is funny. What else do you want? Community House Offers Two Excellent Pictures Neil Hamilton, Dorothy Gulliver, and Ralph Lewis will be the principals in the picturization of "The Shield of Honor," the Community House pre- sentation booked for Tuesday evening, June 12. Victor Hugo»s immortal "Les Miserables" will be viewed on the Community House screen Friday eve- ning, June 15. "ELMER THE GREAT" "Elmer the Great," a play about baseball by George M. Cohan and Ring Lardner, will open at the Black- stone theater on June 18, replacing the farce comedy, "The Baby Cyclone." The Blackstone will again be an all summer theater, and another comedy, "Whispering Friends," recently played in' New York, is scheduled to open there August 26. CHANGES IN CAST More changes in the casts of "Good News" and "Sunny Days," popular musical comedies now playing in Chi- cago, are announced. Douglas Leavitt will replace Frank McIntyre in "Sun- ny Days" Sunday night. Albert Down- ing, formerly of the Chicago cast of "Good News," will take over Jimmy Dunn's role in "Excess Baggage." COMMUNITY HOUSE Tues., June 12| Fri, June 15 Neil Hamilton VICTOR Dorothy Gulliver HUGO'S Ralph Lewis immortal "THE SHIELD "LES OF HONOR" |MISERABLES" Companionate Marriage Play Success at Cort Jean Archibald's clever comedy "A Companionate Marriage" is just round- ing out its first month at the Cort theater and has now settled down for the balance of the summer in this cozy little "House of Hits." This delightfully human and frank fling at the fallacy of "companionate marriage" has been pronounced by Miss Amy Leslie, noted drama critic of The Chicago Daily News, as "the most attractive event in the loop--a comedy of youth, clean mischief, good fun and healthy romance," all of which perfectly describes the story. Contrary to the impression created by the title there is no sex problem involved in Miss Archibald's comedy, it being a remarkably humorous, witty, cynical and at the same time instruc- tive dissertation on this burning ques- tion, exposing the utter inanity of a "companionate" arrangement and in the end bringing the old fashioned wedding ring prominently to the fore. The leading role of Mollie, a girl who is ultra modern to the degree that she enters into a companionate, con- tractual arrangement with her sweet- heart Gregory but keeps her own name and residence thereafter, is in the capable hands of Dorothy Randall who recently scored a hit in "A Man's Man" at the Adelphi. Her younger sister, Lillian, a flapper who endeavors to emulate her big sister by running away to live with her boyish lover, is played by pretty little Joan Peers, well known and popular Chicago girl who gradu- ated from Hyde Park High school. Robert Lowes, as Gregory, is a hand- some young chap who was discovered and brought out by Manager Clyde Elliott. Much of the comedy is provided by those sterling character artists Karl IL. Way and Ann Dere as the old fashioned parents of Mollie with their confused and hazy ideas anent marri- age a la companionate. "A Companionate Marriage" posses- es a-unique appeal to members of the gentler sex as the crowded matinees attest and this merry little comedy seems destined for a profitable summer engagement at the Cort, it being well worth a trip to the loop.
