North Shore Shows Substantial Gains in Building Line Chicago suburban building construc- tion showed a gain of 16 percent in May as compared with May of last year, thus showing that building in the metropolitan area is on an up- ward trend irrespective of the season- al factor incidental to the opening summer building period. Out of a total of thirty-six suburbs making comparative reports, the fig- ures of S. W. Straus and company show that twenty-three of the suburbs made gains as against the same period last year. For the towns reporting, the com- parative total volume of building for May, 1928, was $12,082,504 as against $10,360,734. Kenilworth, with a monthly gain of 587 percent; eclipsed all other sub- urbs whether south, west or north, al- though the Kenilworth total for the month was only $250,775, a figure con- siderably under that of some of its larger neighbors. Other suburbs making significant gains were: Wilmette 57 percent, Winnetka 42 percent, Aurora 146 per- cent, Chicago Heights 147 percent, Elgin 239 percent, Elmwood Park 323 percent, Glen Ellyn 261 percent, High- land Park 23 percent, Joliet 76 percent, La Grange 44 percent, Lake Forest 23 percent, Maywood 88 percent, Mount Prospect 67 percent, Niles Center 78 percent, North Chicago 41 per cent, and Wheaton 52 percent.
