m---- -- July 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 35 NATIONAL CONCERTS FEATURE AT RAVINIA First of Series to Be Given Sun- day, July 15; Present "Fra Diavolo" Next Week One of the special treats of the Ra- vinia season, which was promised by Louis Eckstein when he made his pre- liminary announcements early in spring, will become a reality during | the fourth week of Ravinia opera and concerts which is to begin Sunday afternoon, July 15. This is the re- vival of Xavier Leroux's splendid dra- matic opera "Le Chemineau" which long held an important place in the Ravinia repertoire but which has not been given since 1924. This work is extremely popular with American opera patrons in view of the fact that as spoken drama under the title of "The Harvester" it served as one of Otis Skinner's most effective vehicles. Another item of special interest during the pending week is the sea- son's first presentation of "Fra Dia- volo," a light work which classes as opera comique and which is filled with merry tunes which are introduced one after another as its romantic story (which ends happily) is told. The several cast changes which are to be effected during the week all tend to add spice to the repertoire. Miss Eas- ton is to be heard as Elsa in "Lohen- grin" and Miss Bourskaya will appear as Ortrud in this same Wagnerian work. Queena Mario, who has won special attention at Ravinia this year, is to have the part of Juliet in Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet." Mr. Tokatyan will sing the role of Leopold in "La Juive." Miss Claussen will be Amneris in "Aida" and Mr. Ananian will be the King. The first of the Ravinia series of national concerts will be given on Sun- day afternoon, July 15, and in view of its nature has been called "An After- noon of German Music and German Composers." The Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Eric Del.amarter, will play a special pro- gram on this occasion, featuring many of the most celebrated German com- posers including, of course, the im- mortal Richard Wagner. Jacques Gor- don, violinist, will be the soloist. The occasion will have a festive air and Dr. H. A. Kroll, German Vice-consul General, will be present and will speak. The second of these national con- certs has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon, July 22, and will take the form of "An Afternoon of French Music and French Composers." In ad- dition to the concert by the Chicago Symphony orchestra in which French music will be featured, La Chorale Francaise de Chicago, Charles Le- gourgue conducting, will present sev- eral ensemble groups. This is one of the largest choral bodies in the United States devoting itself to the presentation of French music, and it will be remembered that it appeared at Ravinia last season with unusual success. Leon Rothier, French basso of the Ravinia Opera forces, will give the occasion a patriotic air by sing- ing "La Marseilles." Alfred Wellen- stein, 'cellist, will be the soloist with the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Double Bill Saturday Special interest is attached to the double bill of "Pagliacci" and "Caval- leria Rusticana" which is scheduled for Saturday night, July 14. Both o these operas enjoy the high regard of music lovers of all classes and there has been insistant demand for their repetition ever since they were given on the opening night of the season.
