Kk July 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Shore Theaters "Skyscraper" to Open Next Week's Alcyon Program The Alcyon theater in Highland Park has announced several good pic- tures for the week beginning this Saturday, July 14. The first offer- ing is "Skyscraper," which is to be shown there today. The story of this picture concerns the feud between two rival riveters in the raw skeleton of a metropolitan skyscraper. The noisy boys are William Boyd and Alan Hale and they both love Sue Carol. William Boyd has been seen in more glamor- ous roles, but he has never done bet- ter work. Florence Vidor in "The Magnifi- cent Flirt" will be presented at the Alcyon tomorrow. On Monday and Tuesday the great Lon Chaney pic- ture, "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" is scheduled. Nils Asther and Loretta Young are also among the cast of characters. Photoplay magazine, which chose the picture as one of the six best during the month of June, calls it "the best work of Lon Chaney since "The Unholy Three, and it is a great relief to have him minus his usual sinister makeup." It is the old story of the clown who dies that the girl he loves may be happy. "The Yellow Lily," Billy Dove's lat- est starring vehicle, will be shown at the Alcyon next Wednesday and Thursday. It is a picture that offers much in the way of picturesque, allur- ing foreign locale, striking human types, and quaint costumes. The beau- tiful screen star is at her best as a Hungarian maiden who is pursued by an archduke. Miss Dove gives a truly great performance, as does Clive Brook, who plays the archduke. On Friday, July 20, the Alcyon will present Arthur Lake, the sensational star of "Harold Teen," in a rip-roar- ing comedy, "Stop That Man." In addition to the regular picture program vaudeville performances will be given on Friday, Saturday, and Sun- day. "Thief in the Dark," Shows at Pearl House "Hound of Silver Creek" is the pic- ture to be shown today at the Pearl theater in Highland Park. "Quick Triggers" is tomorrow's offering. George Meeker in "A Thief in the Dark" will be the attraction next Mon- day, July 16, at the Pearl. On Tues- day Ralph Lewis will play there in "Crooks Can't Win" and Wednesday Warner Baxter will be seen in "Trag- edy of Youth." Thursday's booking is "Fashion Madness," with Claire Windsor. A double feature program is scheduled for next Friday--Helen Chadwick in "Modern Mothers" and yirginia Lee Corbin in "The Chorus id." M. shore theater this Sunday, July 15. This picture was directed by the same man who directed the crook picture "Underworld." "The Drag Net" is more of a detective tale than an "underworld" story. It has no real- ism, grim and gripping, such as had "Underworld," but it has more mys- tery, suspense, and brilliance. George Bancroft and Evelyn Brent are the ideal pair for Captain Nolan and "The Magpie," and as much may be said for William Powell as "Dapper Dan" Trent, lord of the world. "Few pictures in screen history have been better played," says one critic. "Bancroft's impersonation is a master- piece; the dramatic contrast between Captain Nolan's desperate deeds and his leisurely, nonchalant manners is melodrama of the first order. Leslie Fenton's role of the humane, shy, but gallant, assistant detective ranks with his famous 'bit' in 'What Price Glory' and Francis MacDonald's laughing gangster characterization is richly spectacular."
