wo ~ WINNETKA TALK July 14, 1928 News of the Theaters Varsity Announces Pictures for Week Starting Saturday Motion pictures to be shown at the Varsity during the coming week in- clude "The Magnificent Flirt," "His Tiger Lady," and "Diamond Hand- cuffs." "The Magnificent Flirt" is the first of the offerings. It is a picture in which Florence Vidor plays a game of wits, and it will be shown at the Varsity this Saturday, July 14. Adolphe Menjou and Evelyn Brent play the principal roles in "His Tiger Lady," coming to the Varsity next Monday and Tuesday. Others in the cast are Rose Dione, Emil Chautard, Mario Carillio, Leonardo de Vesa, and Jules Bancourt. The locale of the picture is Paris and the story is of a stage "super" who, gorgeous in a rajah's costume, falls in love with a duchess. Battles on all the fronts are shown and among them, the battle of Warsaw where millions of Russian soldiers | were defeated. It is generally con- | ceded by those who have followed the motion pictures of the war, is the most thrilling, complete, and convincing picturization of a battle ever recorded by the camera. The result of this battle was instrumental in bringing about the overthrow of the Czar and his government. One reel is also devoted to the portrayal of the maneuvers of Germany's most drama- tic under-sea craft, the U-35. Jack and Jill Players Perform at Drake Hotel The Jack and Jill Players are pre- senting "Mercadet," a comedy in three acts by Balzac, at the Jack and Jill theatre in the Drake hotel, Chi- cago, this week and the early part of next week. Three performances have already been given and three more are scheduled, one each on the eve- nings of July 14, 15, and 18 at 8:30 o'clock. The players are under the direction of Marie Agnes Foley. Another three act comedy, "The Ladies' Battle," by Scribe and Le- gouve, will be presented on the eve- nings of July 21, 22, 25, 28, 29, and August 1. U. Coach School Twenty-one states are represented in the entries already received for the Coaching school, to be conducted by Northwestern university Aug. 13 to 25. High school and college coaches from all over the country are being attracted to the two-weeks session, which has a number of the outstand- ing football mentors on the staff. Courses in football, basketball, track and athletic administration are to be offered. Dick Hanley, head football coach at Northwestern, will have charge of the football course. Supple- mentary lectures will be given by such well-known grid experts as Jess Haw- ley, head football coach at Dartmouth; Arnold Horween, head football coach at Harvard; Judge Walter Steffen, head football coach at Carnegie Tech, and Duke Dunne, line coach at Har- vard. Coach Arthur Lonborg, Northwest- ern's new basketball mentor, whose team won nine out of twelve confer- ence games last season, will conduct the course in basketball. Coach Lon- borg is a product of the Kansas school of basketball and he has had unusual success in previous coaching situations in that state. In seven years of coach- ing his teams have won 84 and lost 14 games. Frank Hill, head track coach at Northwestern, who has turned out many champions in his career, will have charge of the track classes. He is at present in Europe, where he is to attend the Olympic games. He will bring back fresh impressions of that great track classic. K. I. W ilson, athletic director at Northwestern, is also attending the games and will re- turn to give his popular course in Athletic Administration. CLERK ON VACATION John Gukeisen, clerk at the Renil- worth postoffice, began his annual va- cation last Monday. Ruth Elder, who tried to do what Amelia Earhart did, will play opposite Richard Dix in the latter's new starr- ing picture, "Moran of the Marines." This picture is from an original screen story by Linton Wells, newspaper man and aviator.
