July 28, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 11 Weeds One of Two Worst Foes of Vegetable Crops Weeds, along with insects, probably cause most of the vegetable losses that are experienced annually, says L. H. Strubinger, of the department of horticulture, College of Agriculture, University of Illinois. When weeds are allowed to grow unmolested for a few days during the hot weather they either choke out the smaller growing vegetables or seriously impair their quality by retarding their progress, he added. "If constant cultivation is practiced in the garden there should be little difficulty in controlling weeds that might otherwise occur. However, if for any reason the garden is not cared for and weeds are allowed to gain headway, it may take considerable time and patience to rid the premises of them. "If the weeds are small they may be cut off just beneath the surface of the soil in cultivation and will probably die. If they are larger they may need to be pulled and carried away. This pulling can best be done when the soil is quite moist, and if it is too dry the roots may be cut just below the sur- face with a sharp knife. Afterwards, it is always wise to cultivate the area to kill any weeds that are just start- ing to grow."
