In the first place the week marks the beginning of the second half of the current Ravinia opera season. It will likewise bring the debut of Tito Schipa, world famous lyric tenor, whose popularity among the opera patrons of the Chicago district is un- rivalled. Mr. Schipa comes back to the Ravinia forces for the first time since 1925. He is coming to Ravinia directly from Europe, where for the last several months he has scored one triumph after another in London, Paris, Rome and other music centers where he appeared both in concert and opera. Three operas which have not been heard thus far this season are included among the seven which are scheduled for the week ahead. These are "Thais," which will be given as a English Governess Secretary - House Manager Available August 1st Especially adept in handling and training children. Com- petent secretary. Gall and Mr. Danise in the two most important roles; "Marouf," which will be given for the first time west of New York on Wednesday night, August 1, with Mme. Gall and Mario Chamlee as its central figures; and "I'Elisir d'Amore," which is to be presented on Saturday night, August 4, serving as Mr. Schipa's debut vehicle. Miss Macbeth and Mr. Trevisan will figure prominently in the cast. Changes of Cast Several important changes of cast are announced in those operas which will be given repeat performances. Edward Johnson is to have the title role of "Andrea Chenier" when that opera is presented on Thursday night, August 2. He has never sung it at Ravinia before, but the role forms an important part of his repertoire. Mme. Rethberg will come to the role of Maddeleine and Mario Basiola will be heard as Gerrard in this same opera. Mr. Basiola will likewise be heard as DeSiriex in "Fedora," a role he has never sung at Ravinia. Edward John- son will be Canio in "Pagliacci." There has been much interest mani- fested in "Marouf" ever since Mr. Eckstein made the announcement last spring that it would be included in this season's repertoire. It has been heard but little in this country, hav- ing been given its first performance on this side of the Atlantic at the Metro- politan Opera House in New York in December, 1917. The full title of the work is "Marouf, the Cobbler of Cairo" and its libretto is based on one of the fantastic stories of the "Arabian Nights." Its background is an index of its character for no work of litera- ture is more given to the exotic and the unusual than these tales of the Orient. First Presented in 1914 Henri Rabaud, the composer of "Marouf," belongs to the ultra-modern French school. He wrote "Marouf" in 1914 and it was presented for the first time during the spring of that year at the Opera Comique in Paris, where Residents of the CHICAGO GIFTS of Silver North Shore will find our Evanston Branch a convenient and delightful place for the purchase of Wedding or Anniversary GIFTS.
