CADILLAC and LA SALLE SERVICE CADILLAC MOTOR CAR COMPANY EVANSTON BRANCH 1810 Ridge Avenue, Evanston NEW SEWAGE PLANT TO BE FINISHED IN MONTH Sanitary District Rushes Work on $31,000,000 Structure; Is Largest in World With the latter part of August tentatively designated as the date for starting operations, the sanitary dis- trict of Chicago is putting the final touches on its mammoth north side artificial sewage treatment plant at Howard street and McCormick road, preparatory to placing it in active service. It is the largest project of its type in existence. Dedication of the huge works, the forerunner of others of similar mag- nitude in the sanitary district's pro- gram, will be made the occasion for a fitting ceremonial at which thousands of spectators are expected to be pres- ent as well as numerous distinguished invited guests. Costing $31,000,000 with its vast sys- tem of large-sized intercepting sewers honeycombing the area to be served, the project will handle the sewage from the entire territory from Fuller- ton avenue north to the Lake county line, a region now supporting a popu- lation of nearly 1,000,000. The project, incidentally, is the first of three similar units involved in the mandatory program required by the provisions of the federal permit which authorized the sanitary district to use water from Lake Michigan. The plant occupies 70 acres of a 100-acre tract fronting upon McCor- mick road. The additional acreage is provided to permit future expansion when increasing population demands increased facilities. Tests are now under way to gauge the machinery and other operating equipment to in- sure full efficiency when the big plant begins its continuous task of sewage purification. The capacity of the north side works is 400,000,000 gallons of sewage daily, treated in three batteries, each con- taining twelve activated sludge tanks, each 420 feet long. The activated sludge principle of treatment to be applied here is a bacteriological pro- cess differing from the Imhoff tank method, employed in other sanitary district plants mow under operation, in that compressed air is used to oxi- dize the sewage in the tanks and to keep it agitated. The plant itself, exclusive of the treatment tanks, consists of five sep- arate structures conveniently grouped. These are the administration building, the service building, the pump and blower house, the operating galleries and the electrical substation. All of these structures have been built upon an attractive architectural plan which creates a pleasing impression without detracting from the utilitarian value of the buildings. In addition there will be an abso- lute absence of all objectionable fea- tures. Operation of the plant will be an odorless process and with the ex- tensive landscaping which is to be applied around the plant grounds, the entire project will in no way sug- gest from an exterior view that it is the world's largest artificial sewage treatment unit. WASTED FOOD One million dollars worth of food is wasted every day by the American people, according to an estimate of the National Conference of Marketing and Farm Credits. Enough food is wasted annually in this country because of premature spoilage to feed a city the size of New York, it is said. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kaumeyer of 601 Linden avenue are spending the season at their summer home at Chi- waukee. J TO mm y AR ia
