LITERARY NOTES For fourteen years Edwin Arlington Robinson, the poet, has been spending his summers and doing his best work at the MacDowell Colony at Peter- borough, New Hampshire, where in his cabin in the quiet woods the only sounds to be heard are those of the birds and the wind and the showers. His poem "Tristram," which won the Pulitzer Prize, was written there in 1926. Mr. Robinson will bring out this fall a volume containing all his son- nets from 1889 to 1927. Picking up the fall catalogue of Harcourt, Brace and company one is surprised to see that a popular dollar edition of "Elmer Gantry" will come off the press in the fall. It is peculiar that a book most persons have hated as badly as they have hated that one should be so popular. Perhaps it is like "The President's Daughter" which was read by most to satisfy them- selves that it was as black as it was painted. Louis Untermeyer Busy Louis Untermeyer has been busy during the past year. "Moses" is a historical novel based on the life of that leader, studying his personality, and promising to be a first novel worthy of the poet and student that is Louis Untermeyer. With David and Clara Mannes he has edited also a book on "New Songs for New Voices," a collection of modern nursery songs. Peggy Bacon has done the illustrat- ing. Paul de Kruif has written a biog- raphy of the "Hunger Fighters" of North America. He sings the stories of men who have established our food supply. If it is anything like "Mi- crobe Hunters" it bids fair to be a fascinating addition to our informative literature. The "Further Correspondence of Samuel Pepys" will be an interesting addition to the growing literature on and by this remarkable man.
