This picture is based on the play "Rain" in which Jeanne Eagels scored a tremendous hit throughout the country, and is heralded as one of the supreme achievements of motion picture his- tory. Gloria Swanson, playing the part of "Sadie," gives herself to the charac- terization with a whole-heartedness that is remarkable. It is the outstand- ing success of her career. . Today's offering at the Alcyon is "Sally of the Scandals," with Bessie Love. It is not an unusual picture, but it is beautifully presented and sin- cerely acted. The heroine is a chorus girl with a little crippled sister to support. The producer of the show--a mighty nice chap as por- trayed by Allan Forrest--is bowled over by her. The dirty work is fur- nished by the star of the piece who has been a favorite before the boss saw Sally, and by the vicious and jealous young man to whom Sally is engaged. The ending is all the most romantic heart could desire. Esther Ralston Stars "Half a Bride," starring Esther Ralston, will be shown at the Alcyon tomorrow. Gary Cooper is splendid as the man who refuses to be bowled over by Miss Esther's charms. He plays the part of Captain Edmunds who rescues the fiery Esther in a storm at sea after she has attempted to escape in a small boat. The occa- sion of her being on the sea is that her father was not satisfied with the man she wished to marry. It. iis' 'a nice, romantic lightweight comedy drama. Milton Sills, Doris Kenyon, Mon- tagu Love, and Mitchell Lewis have the principal roles in "The Hawk's Nest," to be shown at the Alcyon next Thursday, August 2. Miss Kenyon, resplendent in a blonde wig, plays a swept gutter flower. She seems to have a very good time. Mitchell Lewis as a pal, falsely accused, ap- pears to be just that. "The Hawk's Nest" is a gang picture. Milton Sills plays the role of a mysterious owner of a gang joint called The Hawk's Nest. A murder and other things which one might expect in such a picture are very much in evidence. Show Farce Comedy "Skirts" is the title of a farce comedy in which Syd Chaplin will be seen at the Alcyon on Friday, August 3. The story is about a benedict and his pal who get into much confusion while their respective wives are away, and have a hard time getting out of it when the ladies return unexpect- edly. A blonde and a cruel mother-in- law feature prominently in the pro- ceedings. Tax assessors of the District of Columbia estimate that the White House and the grounds surrounding it are worth about $22,000,000. Only two Federal properties, the Capitol, and the Treasury Department building, are valued at higher figures.
