August 11, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 23 PRESENT "MAROUF" AT RAVINIA NEXT MONDAY (Continued from Page 17) Rethberg will be heard as Maddelena. Mr. Papi will conduct. The extra performance of "Marouf" which will be given on Monday night, August 13, will bring before the foot- lights exactly the same cast which was heard in this colorful work when it was given its initial performance. No new opera of recent years has aroused so much interest among pa- trons of music drama as has this Ra- baud work, which is based on cne of the most fantastic stories of the Arabian Nights. Mario Chamlee has the title role in which he proves him- self not only a great tenor, but a splendid comedian as well. Mme. Yvonne Gall will be the Princess, a part in which she is noted in Paris. Others in the cast are Mme. Claussen, Mr. Rcthier, Jose Mojica, Vittorio Trevisan, George Cehanovsky, Louis D'Angelo, Giordano Paltrinieri and Paolo Ananian. Ruth Page and ballet will present some attractive dances. Mr. Hasselmans will conduct. Rethberg in "Tosca" The announcement that Mme. Elisa- beth Rethberg will be heard again in the title role of "Tosca" on Tuesday night, August 14, is indeed good news, for in this role Mme. Rethberg has a part so eminently suited to her, that her vocal interpretation serves to bring cut every shade of the dramatic meaning of the original Sardou play. Edward Johnson will again be cast as Cavaradossi, a part in which he has won great distinction while Giuseppe Danise will be the polished villain, Scarpia. This is another of Mr. Danise's great roles and one which he sang for the first time at Ravinia some seasons ago. Mr. Papi will con- duct. Tito Schipa as Edgardo in the sea- son's first presentation of "Lucia'-- this is the treat provided by Mr. Fck- stein for Wednesday night, August 15. This melodious Donizetti opera is al- ways welcome, but it is doubly so when Tite Schipa appears as the ro- mantic young nobleman. "Lucia" is highly adorned with beautiful arias which demand exactly the sort of lyric singing that Mr. Schipa has made peculiarly his own. Miss Flor- ence Macbeth will have the title role, which is. one of the most dazzling coloratura parts to be found in the whole of gpera, and Mario Basiola will be Sir Henry. Others in the cast are Mr. Lazzari, Mr. Mojica, Miss Falco and Mr. Paltrinieri. Mr. Papi will conduct. Novel Children's Program The children's concert and enter- tainment will take place as usual on Thursday afternoon, when the Chi- cago Symphony orchestra will play a program suited to the occasion, under the direction of Mr. Del.amarter. The second half of the program will be deveted to a presentation of the pantomime, "The Sleeping Beauty," by the pupils of Miss Mildred Haes- sler. Thursday night, August 16, Wag- ner's "Lohengrin" will be brought to performance again, with the same cast as before. Mme. Rethberg will be heard as Elsa, a role for which she is especially endowed both by reason of her natural artistic ability and bv the years of training she has received in the great German cpera houses. Mr. Edward Johnson will have the name part, in which his work is outstanding. Others in the cast are Louis D'Angelo, Julia Claussen, George Cehanovsky and Howard Preston. Mr. Hassel- mans will conduct. Friday night, August 17, will be a festive occasion, bringing the first Ravinia performance of "I'Heure Es- pagnol" (The Spanish Hour), Maurice Ravel's merry opera which has been called "a musical dainty of marvelous flavor." It is modern in its tone and contains a wealth of good music, not to mention the fact that it is rich in humer. Mme. Yvonne Gall will have the role of Concopcion, in which she has been heard many times at the Opera Comique, Paris, while Desire Defrere will carry the principal share of the comedy. Others in the cast are Mr. Mojica, Mr. Paltrinieri and Mr. D'Angelo. Mr. Hasselmans will con- duct. In conjunction with "L'Heure Espagnol," the second act of "The Jewels of the Madonna" will be given, this being the first time in several seasons that this dramatic work has been included in the Ravinia reper- toire. This act comprises the famous garden scene, which is replete in drama. Miss Easton will be heard as Maliella, with Mario Chamlee as Gen- naro and Mario Basiola as Rafaelle. Mr. Papi will conduct. "Manon" Next Saturday Massenet's "Manon" will be the offering on Saturday night, August 18, but this time with Tito Schipa as the Chevalier Des Grieux. This is an- other of Mr. Schipa's outstanding parts and it will be interesting to find him vis-a-vis with Mme. Gall who will again have the title role, in which she has scored such success this season. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hilton, 455 Birch street, are entertaining Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ladd of Hinsdale this weekend. Qe Mr. and Mrs. C. Elliot Fisher, 534 Meadow road, and their children left yesterday to motor to northern Michi- gan for two weeks. What 1s Due the Public Tue Bell System recognizes the public requirement for a constantly extending and im- proving telephone service. Last year four million tele- phones were either put in or moved. The number of local calls not completed on the first attempt was reduced by five per cent. The average time for handling toll and long distance calls was reduced from two min- utes to one and one half minutes. During the last five years the Bell System spent $1,800,000,000 public. on additions and improve- ments of its plant. The very nature of the tele- phone business necessitates a single interconnected system. The Bell System accepts its responsibility for a nation-wide telephone service as a public trust. Itis fundamental in the policy of the system that all earnings after regular divi- dends and a surplus for finan- cial security be used to give more and better service to the ILLINOIS BELL TELEPHONE COMPANY BELL SYSTEM One System Universal Service
