August 11, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 8 Anna Adams Gordon Reelected President of World W.C.T.U. Miss Anna Adams Gordon of Ev- anston was reelected president of the World's W. C. T. U. at its current sessions in Lausanne, Switzerland. Mrs. Ella A. Boole, national presi- dent, who spends much of her time in Evanston, was reelected first vice president. Miss Emilie Solomon of South Africa was elected second vice president. Miss Maria Sundstram of Sweden was chosen third vice presi- dent. The secretaries are Miss Agnes E. Slack of England and Miss W. T. G. Brown of Canada. Mrs. Margaret C. Munns of Evanston was reelected world treasurer. She is also national treasurer. Plans have been made for campaigns in several countries. New Zealand will vote on prohibition; in Scotland there is a perpetual no-license cam- paign; in Austria the women are try- ing to get 200,000 signatures to a pe- tition to the government asking that saloons be closed Saturdays and Sun- days, and Irish Free State is trying to get a Sunday closing law similar to the one recently obtained by Ulster. Reports from the world convention as written by special correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor, describe one of the most colorful of the convention sessions in the eve- ning meeting at which 31 women, many of them in national costume, described the temperance work in their own countries. Most of the national organizations, it was reported, carry on civic, philanthropic and social work in addition to their temperance ac- tivities. The Swedish group maintains a sum- mer home for young people, an in- dustrial home for girls, three children's homes, five summer colonies for chil- dren, a domestic science school, a nursery, two evening schools, three temperance cafes and a restaurant in the largest park in Gotenburg. Australian women have sailors' rest quarters in many ports; Bermuda has a rest room for factory girls; in Cey- lon there is a children's play center; a kindergarten and training school is maintained at Buenos Aires; the Canadian branch has two homes for business girls, a woman's hospital and rescue home; the Swiss women have opened temperance restaurants, hotels and homes and pavilions. All the countries stress temperance teaching in the schools, Germany sup- plementing the work with 20 traveling teachers. Burma sends teachers all over the country. There is temper- ance instruction in Egypt and Uraguay, in Bulgaria public temperance meet- ings are held, and in England and Wales caravans are maintained to car- ry the temperance message through the rural sections and the value of total abstinence is "otherwise adver- tised.
