August 18, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Smoke Screen Over Lake Will Be Last Event of Institute Laying down a smoke screen, a spectacle new to this section of the country, will be demonstrated this Sat- urday afternoon over Lake Michigan off the Northwestern university cam- pus as a feature of the American Chemical Society institute which is in its last week. Scientists will discuss chemistry in warfare in the closing days of the in- stitute and will view the smoke screen demonstration at 5:30 on the last afternoon. A fleet of airplanes from Selfridge field in Michigan will lay the screen and go through various other maneuvers of chemical warfare in the air. The general conference Saturday afternoon at 3 will be devoted to the relation on chemistry and warfare. Major General Paul B. Malone, com- mandant at Ft. Sheridan, will speak on the "Trend of National Defense." "Chemical Defense--Its Problems" will be discussed by Colonel H. L. Gil- christ, U. S. A.; and J. E. Mills, chief chemist in the chemical warfare serv- ice, U S. A.,, will speak on "Defense of Civilian Populations Against Gas." The evening lecture at 8 Saturday will be by Major Rollo C. Ditte, U. S. A, whase subject will be "Chemical De- ense as Related to the Use of Air- craft." W. Lee Lewis of Northwest- ern's chemistry department will give the closing lecture at 8:45, "Science and Peace." Dr. Lewis is the inventor of lewisite gas. The puzzle of cancer, enigma of mankind of all time, is gradually be- ing unraveled by science, stated Dr. Ellice McDonald, director of cancer research at the University of Pennsyl- vania and the Philadelphia hospital, during one of the past week's lectures. He pointed out two facts especially: 1. Science by making a concerted effort of chemist, biologist, bacteriologist, phy- sicist and medical practitioner, can now determine in advance a present suscepti- bility or inclination to cancer. . 2. Marked benefit can be derived in sus- pected cases by increasing the calcium content of the blood through the admini- stration of thyroid gland extract and other means. "In other words," said Dr. McDon- ald, "a person who suspects that through inheritance he may be a like- ly subject for the disease of cancer in later life, may now be forewarned, and treated for those deficiencies in his blood which are suspected as the cause of cancer." A sure-fire disinfectant for water-- no matter how muddy or germ-ridden --which entails no boiling, but mere dropping in of a small tablet--was de- scribed by Major C. B. Wood of the U. S. army medical school at an insti- tute meeting recently Substance of the tablet, a chemical compound, has just been developed by army chemists, and it is predicted it will prove a great boon not only to soldiers on campaign, but to campers, auto tourists and others who often find themselves in the open without any elaborate methods for sterilizing water, Kitchen utensils which look like the old aluminum variety and yet have none of the disadvantages of denting and knicking which are now common will soon be available to the housewife because of a new process the chemists have discovered. Successful electro- deposition of aluminum on metal, long a poseur for science, was announced during the past week's lectures by Prof. D. B. Keyes of the University of Illinois. Prof. Keyes expressed the belief that this new method will have univer- sal application to all metals. "Some of the possibilities are boron--the hardest known metal, which could make the headlights of an auto out- last the car; tungsten--which would greatly lengthen the life of much of the electrical equipment; tetanium--a non-corrosive use in some paint pro- duction." RETURN FROM MICHIGAN Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Ball, 296 Forest avenue, returned recently after spend- ing a month at the Roaring Brook inn at Harbor Springs, Mich. Their three children, Charles, John and Dan left this week to spend the rest of the sum- mer on a farm near Arten, Wis.
