Conrad Nagel, who plays opposite her as a captain in the Viennese army, looks grand in his fancy military uniform. The pic- ture is Russian. Tania, played by Miss Garbo, is not all she seems to be, or rather, she is more. She is, besides a delightful playmate, a Russian spy, and chum- ming with her proves disastrous for the captain. When they both take a certain train for Berlin, and certain important papers are missing from the captain's dispatch case, and Tania turns up with them in the offices of the Russian secret service, Captain Karl (Mr. Nagel) is promptly demoted, demedaled and debuttoned. At this point everything looks mighty dark. But, meanwhile, in Russia, Tania is feeling sorry for her duplicity. She tries to get out of the secret service but is told "once you take the oath of a Russian spy, only death can release you." Her life is made doubly hard because she is loved by the important General Alexandroff, head spy for Russia, and too important to flout. However, Conrad makes a reappear- ance, this time in Russia. His ambi- tion is to find Tania and "wring her neck until she tells me the truth." Conrad finds Tania, but wringing isn't what he does to her neck. I should say not. Barthelmess' Best Picture Booked for Varsity Next Week A Hollywood fire recently razed over one hundred Indian homes to the ground and provided the film city with one of the biggest thrills of the year. In a short time over $100,000 went up in smoke, attracting thousands of mo- torists from the highways to the scene of the blaze, several miles from the center of Hollywood. Edwin Carewe, directing "Ramona," starring Dolores del Rio, engaged three hundred Ind- jans to participate in the scene. The fire will form a brilliant part of this picture, which will be shown at the Varsity theater this Saturday, Au- gust 18. You're not taking a chance on "The Wheel of Chance," Richard Barthel- mess picture coming to the Varsity for three days beginning next Monday. Critics have declared that Barthelmess does the greatest work of his career in this picture, which is an excellent adaptation of Fannie Hurst's story, "Roulette." The picture has been splendidly directed, staged, and photo- graphed. Outstanding characteriza- tions besides that of the star are those of Margaret Livingston, Ann Schaef- fer, and Bodil Rosing. Bebe Daniels and Neil Hamilton are the principal actors in "Hot News," comedy drama which will be shown at the Varsity next Thursday and Fri- day, August 23 and 24.
