Negro Slayer Is Brought Here for Police Grilling The Winnetka Village hall was the scene of considerable excitement last Monday evening, when David Shanks, negro, and self-confessed slayer of Miss Jennie Meta Constance, North- western university student, was brought here by Chief of Police Wil- liam Freeman of Evanston, for ques- tioning. Shanks was trapped in Chicago where he had sold a watch which he took from his victim, and arrange- ments for bringing him to Winnetka for questioning were made with Chief of Police W. M. Peterson, by Chief Freeman who feared efforts might be made to 'lynch his prisoner were he to be taken to Evanston at that time. The party arrived in Winnetka at 7:30 o'clock. A crowd of several hun- dred soon gathered and three hours later, when the Evanston and Chicago officials departed with their prisoner, the entrance to the Village Hall was blocked, necessitating an exit for the prisoner through a rear door of the building. Miss Eunice Heinsen, 772 Lincoln avenue, entertained Monday night at a bridge and lingerie shower for Miss Elizabeth Ling of Evanston who will become the bride of Bud Reesman of Evanston this fall. -- Miss Nelle Holmes, cousin of Mrs. George Engelhard, 1045 Starr road, who has been in California for the past two months, will be home the early part of September. ---- Mrs. H.
