August 25, 1928 WINNETKA TALK $30,000 Loss From Fire in Kenilworth Residence A stubborn fire early Monday morn- ing caused damage estimated at $30,000 to a vacant house on 'the east side of Sheridan road near Oxford road, Ken- ilworth. Two fire departments fought the blaze almost four hours before it was brought under control. The house belonged to I. A. Bennett, of Pitts- burgh, and was valued at between $65,000 and $70,000. The Wilmette fire department, which takes care of Kenilworth calls, ar- rived at the scene of the fire shortly after 1:30 a. m. after an alarm had been turned in by a passerby. Half an hour later the Winnetka depart- ment arrived to lend assistance in bat- tling the flames which had got a good start. Robert Bennett, of 590 South ave- nue, Glencoe, son of the owner of the wrecked building, states that the loss was covered by insurance. Miss Jessie Booth Is Entertained at Shower Miss Alberdah Helming of Lake Bluff entertained Saturday, August 18 at a luncheon and shower for Miss Jessie Louise Booth of Wilmette who will become the bride of Frederick Hagen of Hubbard Woods on Sep- tember 8. The guests were college friends of Miss Booth, most of them being Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters. Last Monday Miss Amy Hagen, sister of the bride-groom, and Miss Booth were joint hostesses at a luncheon and bridge at Miss Hagen's home, 1387 Scott avenue. The party was a personal shower for Miss Ethelwyn Penrith, whose marriage to Elisha Whitehead of Lake Bluff will take place Sep- tember 20 in Christ church, Winnetka. Miss Booth will be a member of Miss Penrith's bridal party. RETURNS FROM EUROPE Miss Mary Williams, secretary to Dr. J. W. F. Davies, associate min- ister of the Congregational church, re- turned yesterday from a European trip. Miss Williams has been gone since June. RESURFACE ROSEWOOD AVE. An ordinance providing for the re- surfacing of Rosewood avenue and Locust road was passed by the Vil- lage council Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coyle and little daughter, Mary Louise, will leave Tuesday for a two weeks' motor trip to Canada where they will meet Miss Gertrude Coyle, sister of Mr. Coyle, at Montreal. She will land there from the S. S. Doric after spending a sum- mer in Europe. The party will then motor to Quebec for a week's visit. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dawson, parents of Mrs. Duncan McIntyre of Humbolt avenue, who are here from Glascow, Scotland, have just returned from a six weeks' tour through Can- ada and will spend a few weeks in Winnetka until they &ail soon for Glasgow. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Allen, sister- in-law and brother of Mrs. William E. Davis, Jr., of 1086 Private road left this week on a motor trip through the east, to be gone about a month. North Shore Youths in Culver Graduating Class Three Winnetka boys and one Wil- mette youth were among the many stu- dents to graduate from various de- partments of the Culver summer school last Thursday and to obtain awards. Herbert L. Pelott, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Pelott of 1103 Ashland avenue, Wilmette was among those graduated from the woodcraft school. James B. Elder, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Elder of 135 Church road, Winnetka was among those promoted from the junior division of the woodcraft school. Among north shore boys winning awards were Norman B. Roos, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Roos of 491 Haw- thorne lane, Winnetka, second highest number points junior acquatics; and George D. Wolfe Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Wolfe of 511 Cedar street, unlimited class boxing, woodcraft school. Local Girls Help Others "Get Ready for College" Miss Paisley Ball of Winnetka and Miss Barbara Mettler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Harrison Mettler of 1119 Sheridan road, Hubbard Woods, will represent their colleges at the annual "get ready for college" event at Marsh- all Field and company which will be held for two weeks beginning Monday. Miss Ball was graduated from Wells college this year where she was hocky captain for four years, president of the Print club and active in other school affairs. She will be hostess Thursday, September 6. Miss Mettler was graduated from Smith college this June and will be hostess at Smith day on Wednesday September 5 when she will answer questions about the entrance require- ments, curriculum, and rules and reg- ulations of the school as well as ques- tions about the proper clothing. Village Council Passes New Tax Levy Ordinance The tax levy ordinance was passed by the Village council Tuesday eve- ning. It is based on the appropria- tion ordinance passed in June which embodies the budget submitted to the Council by the finance committee and approved at the beginning of the fiscal year. The budget figures were pub- lished in WINNETKA TALK in connection with the report of Village Manager H. L. Woolhiser. ANNOUNCE MARRIAGE Announcement has been made of the marriage on July 28 of Mrs. Vir- ginia Vose of 801 Central avenue, Wil- mette, to Charles W. Braithwaite of Monrovia, Cal. Mr. Braithwaite was a former Wilmette resident. After the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Braithwaite took a short motor trip through north- ern Wisconsin and then left for Cali- fornia. They are stopping at Banff and Lake Louise on their way. ON VACATION Miss Jessie Knox, secretary to Sup- erintendent Carleton Washburne, of the Winnetka Public schools, has been taking a vacation from her duties this week at the Skokie school office. The Izaak Walton league of Winn- etka plans its annual outing to be held September 16 at the league's new club grounds along the DesPlaines river. Plans are made also for the association's exhibit which will be on display at the county fair at Palatine, August 29. A number of Winnetka members are planning to attend with their families. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Allen T. Weinstock, 1242 Cherry street, returned last week- end from the east where they visited Mrs. Weinstock's parents in central Pennsylvania. Kenilworth Happenings MEET AT WINNER'S HOME The Kenilworth Home and Garden club met last Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. O. Belt, 202 Ab- ington road, Kenilworth. Mrs. Belt was one of the prize winners in the Tribune garden contest, so the mem- bers of the club inspected her garden. Miss Florence Katlen, graduate of the school of landscape architecture at the University of Illinois and now em- ployed at the Garfield Park conserv- atory, gave an informative talk on growing annuals. Word has been received from Paris from Mrs. John Rathbone of 523 Ab- bottsford road, Kenilworth, that her son, John, Jr., is recovering from an operation for appendicitis at the American hospital there. John ex- pects to leave there soon and the Rathbones will then continue their trip to England and Scotland. They will return home sometime in Septem- ber. ---- Miss Adalaide Ball, Miss Jane Lit- tell and Miss Ella Jane and Miss Helen Holden, all of Kenilworth, left last Monday for Leland, Mich., where they will visit Miss Ruth Mary Harrison at her summer home. They plan to be gone for ten days. Miss Harrison is the daughter of the Harry P. Har- risons of 307 Abbottsford road, Kenil- worth. --C-- Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Cherry of 422 Abbotsford road, Kenilworth, left this week on a motor trip east. They will be gone a month. Their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Marshall Branch of Evanston are oc- cupying the house while they are away. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Percy Eckhart of 206 Cumberland road, Kenilworth were among the guests at the dinner recent- ly given by Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Afflect of Lake Forest in honor of Rear Admiral Thomas T. Craven who is in command of the Great Lakes Naval Training station, and Mrs. Craven. SAILS FOR EUROPE "Sidney R. Fairlee, 165 Kenilworth avenue, Kenilworth, is on a brief tour abroad, having sailed on the Lloyd Sabaudo liner "Conte Grande" last Saturday from New York City. Dur- ing his trip he will visit Naples, Rome, Venice, Milan, Genoa, Nice, and Mar- seilles, and will spend a week with his sister at St. Jean de Luz, a watering place in the southeastern corner of France. After a week in Paris and another in London he will sail home on the Mauretania, sailing from South Hampton on September 15. Fred F. Skeel of 338 Woodstock ave- nue, Kenilworth, left for Tuscon, Ariz. last week. He was accompanied by his niece, Miss Marilde Johnson of Syracuse, N. Y. Mrs. Skeel and her daughter, Marjorie, have been living in Tucson for the past year and a half where the climate is slowly benefiting the health of Marjorie. Op Mr. and Mrs. George Benson, 210 Melrose avenue, Kenilworth, left last Saturday for a trip to Colorado to see their daughter, Katherine, who is at camp near Ward, Colo. From there the Bensons will go to Estes park and Colorado Springs. --( Mrs. Roy Jarrett and daughter Alice of 534 Essex road, Kenilworth, are making a motor trip to Indianopolis and Evansville, Ind.,, to visit friends. They expect to return via Quincy, Ill, to visit Mr. Jarrett's sister. They will be gone two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Saunders Osborn of 330 Cumnor road, Kenilworth, and Mr. and Mrs. Mason Warner of 154 Church road, Winnetka, motored re- cently to Hayward, Wis.
