September 1, 1928 WINNETKA TALK R.H. Simonds Wins North Shore Title in Horseshoe Tilts R. H. Simonds and E. C. Salzman, of Wilmette, were defeated by Windel- born and Lindberg, of Evanston, in the finals of the doubles competition at the annual north shore horseshoe pitching tournament sponsored by the Evanston Recreation board. The scores were 21 to 13 and 21 to 17. Games were played at Lake Shore park, Evanston, Monday night. The singles championship was won by R. H. Simonds Tuesday night when he defeated E. C. Salzman, his doubles partner of the night before, in an up- hill battle 3-21, 21-4, and 21-9. Salz- man was the winner of the north shore singles championship last year. In playing for the singles title Simonds and Salzman each put out a member of the doubles team which had defeated them Monday night. Winners of both the singles and doubles horseshoe pitching honors will be rewarded with silver loving cups. An interesting match is expected next week when Simonds and Salzman will meet again to decide the horse- shoe pitching championship of Wil- mette. List Success Elements of a Good Scout Troop When more than 800 Scout execu- tives from all over the United States gather next month at Cornell univer- sity, they will discuss among other things program building for Scout troops. Executive McPeek will attend the sessions. In a bulletin issued last week from North Shore Scout headquarters, the following essentials for successful troops were listed: Use the Patrol System, set goals and objectives, have strong troop commit- ties, use Scout ceremonies and forma- tions, have consistent scoutcraft ad- vancement, have overnight camping, have good institutional backing, en- gage in activities as set forth in the Boy Scout Handbook and literature, have good leadership, have well bal- anced troop meeting programs. Start Ticket Sale for Concert by Sousa's Band Tickets have been placed on sale for the two concerts by Sousa's band, planned for Saturday, Sept. 22, after- noon and evening, to be held at North- western university gymnasium. The concerts are being sponsored by the Evanston League of Women Voters and Associate Alumnae of Northwestern university. Tickets may be purchased at Chandler's, just inside the Davis street entrance; obtained from Mrs. U. S. Grant at the Commer- cial bank or at the Community kitchen. Tale of a Cameraman Who Encircled Pole In 1913 a young Australian camera- man who had seen service all over the continent, in the Balkans during the Turko-Balkan War, in Africa, the West Indies and various tropical coun- tries, was commissioned by the Gau- mont company to go with Vilhjalmur Stefansson's Canadian Arctic Expedi- tion to film the expedition and also re- port its progress to a news syndicate. Young Wilkins did not know who Stefansson was; but the expedition sounded like good fun. And he had never been in the Arctic. He went along. The record of Sir George Hubert Wilkins' life and flight over the top of the world will be published by Put- nam's in July, under the title "Flying the Arctic." More Postoffice Workers on Annual Vacation Spell Annual vacations for John Wiltjer and Ernest Bersch, carriers, and Mrs. Marjorie D. Misura, clerk, at the Wil- mette postoffice, began Tuesday. Mr. Wiltjer plans a motor trip to Wis- consin, while Mr. Bersch will remain in Wilmette. Mrs. Misura expects to visit at the home of her husband's parents in Eau Claire, Wis. Three Wilmette carriers, Paul Kivland, Peter Schopen, and Emmet Kivland, re- turned to their duties at the postoffice this week.
