September 1, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Favorites Hold Leads in Tennis Meet at New Trier As play progressed in the New Trier tennis tournament this week the out- standing favorites advanced towards their goal--the championship. The doubles team of McLain and O'Brien reached the finals by defeating Holter and Fleming in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4, and this team is favored to win in the finals match. Seddon-Calvert and Kram-Lange doubles teams will play for the right to meet McLain and O'Brien. No games were played in the junior division of the tournament, but in the senior singles Whitsett, another favo- rite and runner-up in last year's tour- nament, reached the semi-finals by de- feating P. Fleming 6-2, 6-4. Unless an upset occurs he will again meet John Sheldon in the finals. Illinois Freshmen to Be Guests at Tea Wednesday The Chicago Illinae will be hostesses at a Garden tea from 3 to 5 o'clock next Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Charles Henry Dennis, 1225 Michigan avenue, Evanston, given in honor of the women students enter- ing the University of Illinois. Mrs. Carl Plochman of Evanston, chairman of the tea, will be assisted by the following north shore women: Mrs. C. H. Bent of Kenilworth, Mrs. Robert Knox of Glencoe, and Miss Helen Evans, Mrs. R. A. Aiken, Mrs. G. F. Wetzel, and Miss Edith Adkins, of Wilmette. North shore students attending the tea will be: Miss Lillian Russell of Winnetka, Miss Virginia M. Dean of Glencoe, and Miss Virginia M. Harv- ey, Miss Hazel Frankell, Miss Mildred E. Burns, Miss Jeanne Louise Culver, Miss Frances Lois McConnell, Miss Alice Virginia Donahue, and Miss Dorothy A. Farland, of Wilmette. Jessie Booth Chooses Attendants for Wedding Miss Jessie Louise Booth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Peele Booth of Wilmette, has chosen Miss Amy Hagen of Glencoe, sister of the bride- groom, and Miss Alverdah Helming of Lake Bluff, her cousin, to be her attendants when she marries Fred Ellis Hagen of Hubbard Woods Sat- urday, September 8, in her home. The groomsmen will be the brother of the bride, Jack Booth, and the brother of the bridegroom, Jack Hagen. The dinner for the bridal party will be next Thursday evening in the Edgewater Beach hotel. The Rev. Harold C. Case of the North Shore Methodist church of Glencoe will read the service. The re- ception will be held in the Booth home after the service. Mrs. John Arends Wins Wilmette Golf Title Mrs. John Arends of Evanston is champion of the Wilmette Golf club as a result of qualifying rounds played at the club Tuesday, August 21. Tuesday was guest day at the club, and among the visitors were Mrs. Mel- vin Jones, champion of Olympia Fields, and Miss Sena Nelson, who won the junior championship last week at the South Shore Country club. Miss Jean Jones, daughter of the George Jones of 318 Oxford road, Kenilworth is recovering from a tonsil operation. ---- Miss Bethany Crowe, 234 Rahleigh road, Kenilworth returned last Friday from a two weeks' trip to Owasso, Mich.
