September 1, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 31 Loss of 14 Veteran Gridmen Gives Dick Cause for Anxiety With fourteen lettermen lost to the Wildcat squad through graduation, coach "Dick" Hanley is faced with the problem of develop- ing a conference caliber grid ma- chine from a hand- ful of veterans and a number of inex- perienced sopho- mores. The football seas- on is rapidly ap- proaching and the plans of the Purple board of strategy for the fall cam- paign are shaping (Ray) up, although optim- Coach Hanley ism as to the out- come is a scarce quantity around Patten gym just at this time. "When practice has ac- tually started, Dick and his cabinet will be in a better position to make prophecies. Among the veterans in the Wild- cat backfield this fall will be Capt. Holmer and Achers at full; Calderwood, Hass and Berg- herm at half and Levison, Fox and Rojan at quarter. Into the hands of these and whatever can be found among the erstwhile fresh- men will be passed the ball carried by Lewis and Gustaf- son. Verdell is the lone veteran reg- ular end back for another campaign. while Verdell is a good wingman, it will be a problem to find a running mate for him who will be able to take the place of Fisher or Panosh, both of whom were graduated. There are several good end possibilities ameng the sophomores -- Woodworth, Oliphant, Baker and Massey -- who will undobtedly see much service dur- ing the year. Few promising linesmen can be found in the sophomore ranks and the major part of the gruelling work will probably have to be shouldered by the veterans, among whom are Hazen and Sinkler, tackles; Dart and Anderson, guards, and Erickson, center. R. Schu- ler, Karstens, Rosie, Schneider, Wy- man and Hellerman are gone. Returning reserves from last year's varsity include Carter and Clarr, half- backs; Spadea, Singleton and Kenty, guards, and Cool and Vandenberg, tackles. An extra burden is placed upon the Capt.
