HARDWARE 556 Center St. Ph. Winn. 998-99 Cites Chicago as Center of Culture Editor's note: Appended is a communi- cation published in a recent issue of the Chicago Evening Post over the signature of Harry Edward Freund, 1109 Merrill avenue, Hubbard Woods. It is an ex- ceptionally effective summary of Chica- go's justifiable claims to distinction as one of the world's great -centers of art and culture. The article is in refreshing contrast to the description of Chicago the world has been accustomed to hearing, especially in recent years. Chicago's cultural life has never been properly exploited, and now that Chi- cago is in the international limelight with the Chicago World's Fair Cen- tennial celebration of 1933, it is timelv to give a short summary of Chicago's claims as a center of culture. Among them can be enumerated the three universities, Chicago, Northwest- ern and Loyola; Field museum. Art institute, Public library and its branches, Crerar and Newberry libra- ries, Armour Institute of Technology, Historical society and the new proi- ects under wav. Rosenwald Industrial museum, Shedd aquarium and the Planetarium. In the realm of music Chicago has the Civic opera, Ravinia opera season. Symphony orchestra _ acknowledged by competent critics to be the great- est in this country, Apollo club, Men- delssohn club, singing societies of va- rious nationalities, Christmas Carol IE LJ i E JHA i For Dollar Day Rompers 1 yr. size only Sweaters Children's sizes only Silk Scarfs Distinctive patterns Windsor Ties Plain and plaid Hats an assortment of Straws and Felts 565 Lincoln Ave. WINNETKA civic movement, musical colleges, con- servatories apd schools. Leading busi- ness and public utility corporations have their own bands and choral as- sociations, prominent men are mem- bers of the Business Men's orchestra, and also belong to glee and music clubs taking active participation; the Woman's Symphony orchestra is an- other feature of the musical life of this city. The marked progress that has been made by the Opera in English society has resulted in the headquarters be- ing transferred to Chicago. The head- quarters of the Drama League of America are located in Chicago. The little theater is proving its success and is in full swing in Chicago, with nearly a dozen little theaters, producing the plays of the old and new dramatists, with every encouragement given to the works of aspiring play writers. Chicago has notable poets, composers, authors, artists, many of whom have achieved wide fame. The public forums have attained their best development in Chicago, and during the season celebrated nation- ally and internationally known men and women versed in science, art, philosophy, social economy, sociology, psychology, and of broad understand- ing of the problems of today are heard from the platform with an open dis- cussion as an aftermath of each lec- ture. Chicago has clubs, societies and organizations in which representative men and women take an earnest and sincere interest for the betterment of life. The fine public parks, drives, boule- vards and beaches of Chicago on the lake front and its palatial hotels with every luxury, comfort and convenience add to the fascinating attractions of the wonder city of the world. Chi- cago is the convention city of the United States, as proven by the in- creasing number of important conven- tions held each year. With public spirit and civic pride, the daily newspapers of Chicago housed in their splendid structures with every up-to-date facility, spread the human gospel of the pulsating and ever energetic, ever dynamic forces that make for the unprecedented and unrivaled growth and progress of Chi- cago, destined to be the greatest city ir the world. Chicago is the heart of America, and the Chicago World's Fair Centennial celebration in 1933, with the invitation extended with hands across the sea to all the world to unite in the advance- ment of mankind, Chicago will be the soul of America, blazing the trail for the brotherhood of the peoples of all nations. --HARRY EDWARD FREUND HUBBARD WOODS PHARMACY DOLLAR DAY BARGAINS 75¢ Mifflin 50c J 35¢ 10c Dona or Rubbing c Jergens Palmolive | Laco Castile Lotion Shaving Soap Alcohol 3 for $1.00 Cream 15 cakes 2 for $1.00 * 5 for $1.00 $1.00 $1.00 Enoz | 50c¢ Hinkle 50¢ $1.75 2 qt.
