There were twelve permits for garages, ac- counting for only $5,750, while another $4,000 was credited to miscellany. The total for the month, also for the first time this year fell below the hundred thousand mark, the figures showing $99,250. A comparison with August of last year shows that last month was lower by something like $75,000. This, how- ever, is not particularly surprising for the reason that the cost of residences fluctuates and commercial improve- ments only frequently raise the total. For instance in August of a year ago only four permits were issued for resi- dences, these being for a total of only $36,000. But commercial improve- ments accounted for $56,000, garages ran to a startling total of $40,640 and the miscellany accounted for another $12,250. Seasonal Lull Here Also it should be mentioned that there usually is a seasonal lull in Au- gust. This is made very evident in comparing the figures of last niorith with those of July the previous month. The difference in the total is quite sizable running to exactly $104,375. In- dications however, are that for Sep- tember the figures will be boosted, but not largely. The present lull will not prevent Wilmette from reaching a new record for the year, for the first seven months were by far larger than for any other seven months of a previous year.
