September 22, 1928 WINNETKA TALK : 9 FIND TRAFFIC GNARL Elm and Center Street Intersection In- creasingly Dangerous to Pedestrians, Declares Trustee Schell The Village council Tuesday eve- ning informally discussed the growing menace of automobile traffic to pedes- trians at the intersection of Elm and Center streets, but without taking any action. The matter was introduced by Trustee R. H. Schell, who expressed the opinion that a policeman should be stationed at this corner, particularly during the hours when children are passing that point in large numbers, in going to and from school. Motor traffic on both these streets is very heavy. The jog in Center street, at Elm, and the blocking of traffic when the gates at the railroad crossing are down, further complicate the situation, it was pointed out. When Center street from Elm street north, is widened and improved, as planned, traffic lights may then be effectively installed, and the grade separation plans, with track depression, would afford still greater relief, it is said. But until these changes are brought about, Trustee Schell felt other tem- porary safety measures should be taken. The present police force is not suf- ficient in numbers to enable the plac- ing of an officer here nor at certain other corners where they could be used at times to excellent advantage in directing traffic, it was explained, and for the time being no action will be taken. Lighten Gym Work on Scout, Camp Fire Days Skokie school has relieved boys from the Thursday afternoon athletic ac- tivities so that there may be no extra pressure put on the boys on their Scout day. The Scouts meet each Thursday evening in Community House, and this consideration on the part of the school is a great help to the work, to parents and the boys. H. P. Clark, the athletic director, is especially sympathetic with this meas- ure. Skokie school has also freed Wed- nesday afternoons this year for Camp Fire activities, placing no athletic events or practices upon this day. This means that the Camp Fire Girls can meet as a unit in Community House each Wednesday and have uninter- rupted time for this activity after school which means everything to the progress of this work for girls. Skokie school also gives certain credits towards graduation for work satisfactorily done in both these or- ganizations. Such co-operation fur- thers tremendously the work for these young people. Playfield Women Hold Final Event Sept. 26 The next, and final women's tourn- ament of the season at the Skokie Playfield Golf course will be held Wed- nesday morning, September 26, at 9 a. m.
