All this from the decks Mayor Bartlett Elected Municipal League Head By action which came from the floor of the convention Mayor Charles H. Bartlett was elected president of the Illinois Municipal league at its fifteenth an- nual session held in Jol- ietlast week. The dele- gates went over the heads of their com- mittee mem- bers and nominated and elected the Evan- Wi ston execu- tive. Mayor Bartlett The out- standing result of the discussion and the addresses on the convention program, according to Mayor Bartlett, was the strengthening of the sentiment that city officials should play an important part in influencing state legislation. These officials, he pointed out, are in close daily contact with the people and know their needs and wishes. A resolution presented by the mayor on behalf of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce calling for legislation deal- ing with dangerous subnormals was passed by the league. Four hundred delegates attended from all parts of Illinois. The place of next year's meeting has not yet been selected. Gould Davies, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. F. Red Cross Pleads for Contributions to Hurricane Area There is immediate need for relief in the West Indies following the dev- astating hurricane of last week, and the American National Red Cross has appealed for voluntary contributions to the relief program, according to James B. Forgan, Jr. chairman of Chicago chapter, of the Red Cross. "The Red Cross has given $50,000 and dispatched expert disaster relief workers to Porto Rico," Mr. Forgan said. "Tons of foodstuffs, clothing and supplies have also been shipped to the islands. However, this is only a small start since the preliminary survey made in the islands show need of a large relief fund such has been the heavy losses in life and property." President Coolidge Saturday re- quested that the Red Cross take charge of the relief program in the islands and at the same time placed at the organization's disposal any and all naval craft necessary to transport workers and supplies to the relief of the sufferers. Contributions to the relief fund should be sent to Chicago chapter, American National Red Cross, 616 S. Michigan avenue, Mr. Forgan said. They will then be transferred to Wash- ington in a lump sum.
