Deerfield, Illinois PHONE DEERFIELD 241 | Hickory Trees Need Air, Space for Roots The hickory tree is native to this part of the country, some beautiful specimens growing on the north shore. Unfortunately, the home owner often finds that after a year or two the tree dies, apparently not from any disease or worm. The tree has prob- ably been smothered in the filling of the lot. The land in which the hick- ory is found is often low, and in fil- ling in the lot the tree trunk is buried one to three feet. Since the hickory is a delicate tree it can not stand to be buried so deeply but must be welled around with brick. HOW TO STORE SEED Seed should be placed in a tin box for storage during the winter. Because of the humidity of the atmosphere around the lake region, a tin box lined with wood is best. VIOLET RAY WINDOWS A newly invented special window glass which permits the violet rays to filter into the nursery and children's play room will prove beneficial in a climate where they must play indoors much of the year. 3 Miles W. of Waukegan Rd. The embargo of the Federal Horti- cultural Board has left only the do- mestic Narcissi to be grown. The paper white Narcissi and Dutch Ro- man Hyacinths take from two to three months to bloom. The French variety will stand forcing while the Dutch variety will grow best in window boxes and pots. Less often seen is the giant Ama- rvllis, the largest forcing bulb which the amateur can grow successfully in- doors. They must be grown in pots of loam, sand, and leaf mold and watered sparingly until the shoots be- gin to appear. Often growers will keep them in the dark until four or five inches of the shoot is showing. Another flower which can be forced is the lily of the valley. The pips may be forced in a bowl if placed in Sphagnum moss, watered frequently and kept in a warm place. They must be shaded from light at first and then placed in a very warm temperature to bloom. FOLLOW ROOM'S FUNCTION The essential thing to remember when decorating a room is that the room should perform the function for which it is intended. The sunroom should let in light, the dining room should be decorated so that the ap- petite is not taken away. Sweet pea and snap dragon seeds, as well as the seed from other hardy plants should be sown now for flower harvest next year. The beds should be protected from freezing. NEW NOTE IN DRAPES Tapestries From India Offer Wide Variety of Uses for Autumn Season of Interior Decoration Imported tapestries from India are finding vogue with the fall decorator as a new and original material with which to dress windows. The Tree of Life and other elaborate designs were first used but now the latest imports come in small all-over designs which allow the decorator to cut them to a suitable length. The curtains serve in the sun room, breakfast room, or bath room, and most charming of all are the matted wool rugs which go with them. The wool is held together with the elabor- ate chain stitched design which may correspond in color and design with the curtains. The walls of a bath may be painted, as was one I have in mind, from the design on the rug. This bath was tiled up five feet, the mural tak- ing up the rest of the space to the ceiling. To go back to the curtains, they are made on heavy muslin or mohair and the designs are stitched on them in light wools. For use in any other room than those mentioned, it may be tco stiff and heavy as a drape or the light color of the background may not har- monize with the rest of the furnishings. TILE RENOVATION If the art tiles in a room are of the wrong color to harmonize with the rest of the decoration, mix paint of the desired shade with the white of an egg and paint over the tiles. When tiles are washed they should be given a light coating of liquid wax to keep them from getting dirty too quickly.
