October 6, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 49 Hup Century Being Shown at the Paris and London Shows The rapid strides by Hupmobile featured by the latest model, the Century, are due to "keeping up to the minute" in all details of manufac- ture, according to Gould C. Davis of Winnetka, Hupmobile dealer. "Study 'of the development of Euro- pean manufacture has played an im- portant part and that the Hupmobile organization realizes this is made ap- parent by the news that a representa- tive of the organization is attending the 1928 European automobile shows. R. S. Cole, vice-president in charge of sales of the Hupp Motor Car corporation, is now in Paris attending the automobile show which opened October 4. During his week's stay in the French capital the usual prac- tice will be followed of having a ban- quet and a meeting for all European Hupmobile distributors, at which Mr. Cole will be present and take part in a general discussion regarding further development of business on the con- tinent. After completing his work at Paris, Mr. Cole will proceed to London to carry out a similar program at the time of the Olympia show opening October 10. This study in connection with development of European manu- facturing will, it is expected, result in Hupmobile taking advantage of new and unusual ideas to further increase the popularity of its cars in country and abroad and to carry along the expansion of the company's busi- ness which has been a striking feature of automobile history during the 1928 season. The number was 5,310, the figures being for July 1 of this year. Now there comes to hand more in- formation which is highly interesting as it forms a basis for comparison. Gould C. Davis, Winnetka, Hupmobile distributor, has secured figures show- ing that ten years ago, or in 1918, there were only 1,221 cars in the four vil- lages mentioned. Thus there are now more than four times as many automobiles. SHEBOYGAN IS AGGRESSIVE Completion of the millionth square yard of concrete street pavement, laid in Sheboygan, Wis., was celebrated re- cently. State, county and city officials joined in congratulating the city on its achievement. WAIT TILL THE BOAT DOCKS Motorists who start their engines on ferries before the boat has docked are violating a federal statute and are sub- jecting themselves to a maximum of 90 days in jail and $500 fine, accord- ing to the Chicago Motor club. The law specifies that the engine of the car must not be started until the ferry has made fast to the slip or wharf. "This is strictly a protective measure and is designed to safeguard pass- engers, cars, freight and ferry equip- ment," the club points out. Individuals who violate the law endanger others, as well as themselves, and may cause serious accidents."
