Welsh and associates have purchased the leasehold estate and two story Chamber of Commerce building, 518 Davis street, Evanston, for a reported $275,000, from Morris E. Feiwell. The lease is for 100 years beginning in 1923 and calls for $10,000 rental annually. It is understood the new owners in- tend to erect a seven story building when leases permit, in about ten years. The site is 120x116, and is across from the North Shore hotel. Mr. Feiwell is a vice president of the Foreman banks and a member of the law firm of Epstein, Feiwell, Arvey & Sachs. Samuel B. Epstein and Kirkland, Fleming, Green & Martin were attorneys. National R. E. Board Soon to Publish 1928 Book The Annals of Real Estate Practice for 1928 will be published by the Na- tional Association of Real Estate Boards the last week in October. The publication, which this year will be a single volume of more than 1200 pages, contains each year the best contribu- tion to real estate thought which the vear has brought out in any field. It thus records the vear's new growth in real estate methods. Dr. Glenn Frank's challenge to the Realtor as the new pioneer, calling on him to bring to the work of city build- ing order and beauty in place of the trail of ugliness and impermanence left by the pioneer of an older period, in- troduces the new volume. The effect of aviation on future real estate development is discussed by William P. MacCracken, Jr., Assist- ant Secretary of Aeronautics, United States Department of Commerce. The pronounced influence which the auto- mobile had and is still having on the direction of city growth and on real estate values is discussed by Stanley L.. McMichael, of Cleveland. PHILADELPHIA IS BOOSTED Direct connection between real estate sales and city progress is recognized vividly in a remarkable series of dis- play editorials which are being pub- lished by three of the leading news- papers of Philadelphia. The news- papers have prepared and are publish- ing in their columns, at their own ex- pense, notable advertising campaigns in the interest of investment in the city's real estate. STUDY FARM PROBLEM Formulation of some plan for the state of Kentucky by which farm lands which have been or are about to be lost through mortgage foreclosure may be returned to the original owners or brought into successful ownership by new farmer purchasers will be under- taken by the Kentucky Real Estate association in accordance with a reso- lution passed at its annual convention. DO YOU KNOW That Realtors of the suburb of Wheaton have followed the lead of the North Shore Board and declared for a closed Sunday. Building Pointers HE home builder who is erecting a home on clay soil or any kind of soil excepting sand, should play safe and see that provision is made in his cellar for underfloor drainage. No matter how excellently laid a cement floor may be, if there is opportunity for water to form pockets underneath it, the pressure against the concrete will result in eventual cracks. Pre- venting any danger of this happening can be accomplished by the installa- tion of a drain underneath the floor. Properly pitched and well laid, this drain should last as long as the house. Floor tiles? Have you ever consid- ered this method of solving your floor- ing problem? It is a method much in vogue now through the strong influ- ence of Mediterranean styles have had on American architecture and home furnishings. Formerly, even now per- haps, many of us think of tile as a cold and formal material. Not much warmth where a cozy homelike effect is desired. This really is not so, how- ever; floor tiles are manufactured as colorful and gay and lively looking as one can want. They are easy to take care of, too, these vivid blocks in var- jous forms. Naturally the problem of the decorator is different when the floor is of tile than when it is of the hard wood to which we are all so ac- customed. Tile tones are different from wood tones and besides their surface is textured and patterned. Care in the planning of your home is vastly important, for a well planned house means an economical one, a comfortable one, a good looking and convenient one. Here is one of the many points where the services of a well trained architect can be of such great value, for the ability to plan efficiently is not possessed by every one, but is mainly acquired through training and experience. Gas for heating, which is still only at the beginning of its development, has increased, according to recent esti- mates, more than 2,000 per cent since 1919. There are at present several hundred thousand central gas house heating systems installed and every month shows a mark increase in these systems. Not only is the use of gas for heating puposes rapidly expanding, but also its increased use for cooling purposes is evident. Iceless refrigera- tion has produced another market for gas and a possible use for gas as a general house cooling system in sum- mer is predicted. This would mean that its use in summer would be bal- anced by its use as a heating medium in winter.
