Smith, famous Y. M. C. A. worker, lecturer and author, will talk October 7 before the Sunday Evening Fox club of Wil- mette The meeting will be at 7:30 o'clock in the First Congrega- tional church and Mr. Smith's subject will be, "America at the Cross-Roads." Mr. Smith has addressed t he Sunday Evening club on two oc- casions. He has just returned to { TR ------ his h om e at White Plains, N. Y. before starting on this lecture tour. He has been chairman of committees on law en- forcement and on international rela- tions. Beginning his public career as chair- man of the Y. M., C. A. organization at Sioux Falls and Dubuque, Ia, Mr. Smith in 1896, turned to evangelistic work until sent by the international committee of the Y. M. C. A. to the army camp at Chickamauga in 1898. He was a missionary among the army camp at Chickamauga in 1898. In his Y. M. C. A. work Mr. Smith always urged a greater emphasis on the religious phase of the Y. M. C. A. work. Community House Activities Open for Winter Season Community House regular activities for the season will begin during the coming week. Starting with the woman's gymnasium class Monday morning, under Harry P. Clarke, the different gymnasium classes for men, women and children, the social dancing and rhythmic dancing groups will begin work. "Friendship Circle club for girls holds its first meeting Tuesday evening at half past eight. Any maid work in Winnetka homes will be most welcome in this group, and is urged to come and join with this friendly club, and share in their happy times. ; Registration for the classes in Eng- lish for foreign born men and women will be held Monday evening, October 8. The regular work in these classes will begin the following Monday, Octo- ber 15. Miss Millicent Anderson, Miss Iivia Youngquist, and Miss Margaret Wilson of the Winnetka Public schools will be the instructors. ; It is urged that all who are planning to enter any of the activities offered by Community House register during the coming week if possible. RETURN TO WINNETKA Mr. and Mrs. E. Hubert Allen are again in their home at 1405 Edgewood lane, after a summer's absence. Mrs. Allen returned last Friday from Dor- set, Vt, where she had been visiting her brother. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Allen, son and daughter-in-law of the Hubert Allen's, who have been stay- ing in Kenilworth this summer, are now touring in the East and upon their return will take an apartment near the University of Chicago which Mr. Allen will attend.
