54 WINNETKA TALK October 20, 1928 TOWELS FOLLOW COLORS The modern bathroom has "gone color" as has every other room in the well-decorated house. Linen towels have, for some time, been a feature of the scheme with their colored damask borders. These may be pink, green, mauve, yellow--chiefly pastel shades. Another novelty is hand- painted designs on linen towels. These are skillfully applied in delicate shades and may be laundered with impunity. The newest closet box has four slanting shelves for shoes and the drawer for hosiery at the top. Hand quilting, a few years ago, was thought a lost art, but was only mislaid. Now the quilted articles come in sets of comfort and pillow which make the bed smart in daytime. Too, they are favored highly for the chaise lounge in the boudoir. Among the designs is a peacock which may be worked out in the col- ored thread on plain satin. Ships and conventional flower designs are also used for this purpose. A daytime spread of soft rayon quilted on the part that is at top of the bed, with a deep flounce around the side which will conceal the hoxed springs, and with an attached pillow has been on display in a north shore shop. Household Bird Needs Attention from Owner The bird cage should be cleaned daily and fresh sand, water and seed put in the cage. Be sure the cage is the right size for your bird. A cage which is too small will irritate the tail feathers and destroy the health of the bird. Protect your canaries from all draughts. Give your canary plenty of sunlight without sunstroke. A canary should be bathed at least three times a week. If your canary is ailing, do not meddle. Take him to an authorized pet dealer. Do not keep your canary in a wooden cage. Use wire or pyralin, for vermin get in the wooden bars. HAND WOVEN COVERS BECOME HEIRLOOMS Great-Grandmothers Made Pat- terned Woolen Strips for Wedding Chests Hand Woven coverlets, handed down from Colonial days, are as in- teresting an heritage from our great- grandmothers as we can find. The loom used was much like the looms found in the factories where hand- woven woolen goods are produced. Some of the modern home-economics departments in the universities have these looms set up for the instruction of their students, The patterns made with four sets of headle frames are extremely compli- cated. For plain weaving of linen or cotton cloth just two sets of headle frames were used. When the headles were threaded and a complicated pat- tern threaded into the cloth, the set of headles was lifted by pressing the foot tradle to make the shed and the weft thread was shot through by means of a shuttle and pushed into place with one or two strokes of the batten. Weaver Set Up Looms The coverlets were woven in stripes and sewed together. The housewife was sometimes incapable or lacked the time to make the covers in the more complicated patterns, so the profes- sional weavers traveling through the country made the covers for the housewives, staying two weeks here and two weeks there, setting up the looms and weaving the cloth. The thread was spun against the time of his coming, and often the visit of the weaver was the busiest time of the season for the housewife.
