October 27, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 9 RED CROSS ROLL CALL OPENS HERE NOV. 11 Mrs. Willoughby Walling Di- rector of Membership Drive in Winnetka Armistice Day, November 11, the American Red Cross will make its twelfth annual appeal for member- ships that America's "Greatest Mother" may continue and expand its effort in the work of humanity, Roll call organization and direction in Winnetka will be under the leader- ship of Mrs, Willoughby G. Walling. The National goal is 5,000,000 member- ships by the close of the drive on Thanksgiving day. The local quota has not been assigned as yet. Decade of Peace-Time Work Speaking of the drive Mrs Walling said : "The twelfth annual roll call opens on the tenth anniversary of the Armis- tice. The campaign marks a decade of peace-time service under the Red Cross emblem. And, as fate would have it, that industry is emphasized by the great and grave problems which, in Porto Rico, in the Virgin Islands, in Haiti, and in Florida--swept to destruction by hurricane--are being solved by the relief operations of the American Red Cross. "The Red Cross is the recognized relief agency of the people of the United States; it is their anchor in storm and strife, because to the Red Cross is given the authority and con- fidence of all men to bring peace and American Red Cross. Seek 5,000,000 Members "We seek five million memberships this year because in the expanded pro- gram of the Red Cross at least this number must be secured. Daily new demands for service are made and they must be answered. Other than our work in disaster, we handle thousands of items of work for ex-service and service men; carry on classes in first aid and life savings; home hygiene; braille and last but not least our work among the school children in the Junior Red Cross. "The Red Cross is YOUR organiza- tion and by your support we can raise our local quota quickly--and perhaps be one of the first of the 3,900 chap- ters in the United States to lend our support to this great agency--The American Red Cross."
