Hayes. of Winnetka, President of the Chicago Motor Club. "The latest state to endeavor to safeguard motorists in this respect is California," continued Mr. Hayes. "Voters in that state will ballot No- vember 6 upon a proposed $10,000,000 bond issue. The funds derived will be used to defray the cost of separat- ing approximately 400 highway and rail crossings on the state highway system. Chance for $20,000,000 Fund "In the event this proposition is approved by the voters, negotiations will be started to determine what sum the railroads shall add to the $10,000,- 000 as their share in the project. The state railroad commission will sit as an arbitrary group, with the carriers on one side of the table and the state on the other. "The general policy in that state is for the railroads to pay one-half of the cost of such projects and the state the other half. Should this rule be applied after the bond issue is carried, $20,000,000 should be available for the western states' war on grade crossings. "The work of separating the cross- ing will thus be greatly facilitated. At the rate of progress in California in the past, it was estimated that thirty years would have been required in which to complete the work. It is likewise expected that with the ap- proval of the proposition, the coun- ties will take similar action. The total number of grade crossings in that state in 1927 was 1,740. Michigan Lights Crossings "Michigan . is another state that is cognizant of the danger that lurks on every rail and road crossing. Nash Gains Strong Position in Field of 6 Cylinder Car More reports of a record sales year by Nash Motor company are an- nounced by O. E. Springer of Subur- ban Nash Sales of Winnetka. Mr. Springer has received information that registration figures for eighteen states show that the Nash car is setting a fast pace for six cylinder automobiles. In many instances the figures show that Nash is in third position in sales among all motor registrations, the leaders, of course, being Chevrolet and Ford. The production figures, accord- ing to Mr. Springer are evidence that the factory has been working at ca- pacity for many months. The news that Nash ranks as first for cars of its own field in Cook county already has been published, but of equal interest is the information that Nash has gained a strong hold in the New York area. In New York, more Nash cars were put into the owner's hands than Chevrolet, the Nash com- I pany reports. Mrs. W. G. Hibbard of Willow road, Winnetka, an official of the Illinois League of Women Voters, is the proud new owner of a Chyrsler 75 converti- ble coupe, body by Locke. Hupp Turning Out New Custom-Built "Town Sedan" Car In response to a widely expressed desire for a custom built closed car in the Century Eight series, the Hupp Motor Car Corporation is now putting on the market a new five passenger Town Sedan in this model, which is on display at the local Hupmobile branch, according to Gould C. Davis, Winnetka dealer. The new Century Eight car was planned to come into production at the time the 1929 Century cars were in- troduced, it is explained by Mr. Davis, but pressure on plant facilities caused by the record breaking sale of all Hupmobile products this year has thus far prevented its being built in quant- ities. Samples are now being dis- tributed throughout the United States, however, and as reports to the manu- facturers show that it is proving high- ly popular wherever it has been ex- hibited a large demand is anticipated by the company and preparations are being made for its output. The Town Sedan's Raulang body is both wider and longer than that of the Standard Eight model and full ad- vantage has been taken by Hupmobile engineers in utilizing the additional space to increase seating capacity and leg room for passengers.
