The story 1s a vivid tale of a reporter's chase for a bandit leader, assisted by his dog. The trail leads through the New York un- derworld into the haunts of gamblers. Vivid battles, hair-breadth escapes, and other rapid fire excitement is blended into a pretty love story between the reporter and a cabaret dancer who aids him in the quest. Louise ILorraine plays the girl, A second story of newspaper life is portrayed in "Freedom of the Press," which will be shown at the Teatro del Lago this Sunday. This story concerns a young man who finds that the guard- ian of the girl he loves is the "man higher up" in the municipal vice ring, which his father, editor of the leading newspaper, is fighting. The editor is murdered by the ring and the boy is faced with carrying on his father's po- licies regardless of his fiancee's plead- ings. The development of this situa- tion makes an exceedingly strong dra- ma. Lewis Stone and Marceline Day have the leading roles. "Lilac Time" Monday "Lilac Time," coming to the Teatro del Lago next Monday and Tuesday, is a thrilling and romantic war drama with enough sentiment to lift it above the run of war plays. "Lilac Time" is a small farm near the French front, where seven of the Royal Flying corps are quartered. Its lilac gardens form an exquisite setting for the love story. Colleen Moore, as Jeannie, and Gary Cooper, as Captain Blythe, do excel- lent work in their romantic roles. The picture "Craig's Wife', which will be at the Teatro del Lago next Wednesday, is modeled closely after the play of the same name from which it was adopted. Irene Rich as Mrs. Craig compares favorably with the house worshipping, dust detecting lady portrayed on the stage by Crystal Herne. The players supporting Miss Rich have been chosen carefully and add to the high quality of the picture, which was ranked among the six best in a recent month's review. Clark and McCullough play the leads in "The Diplomats," now being directed by Norman Taurog. Alcyon theater in Highland Park next Friday night, November 16. In the Alcyon presentation of the play Joe Driscoll will have the role made famous by Collier. The picture for that evening will be Jack Holt in "Avalanche." The Alcyon management announced this week that the theater will have vitaphone, movietone, and complete talking picture equipment in the near future. Broadway Comedian Will Appear on Granada Stage Eddie Conrad, Broadway comedian, was to arrive in Chicago this week for a personal appearance at the Marks Bros. theaters. He will be at the Gran- ada for one week beginning this Sat- urday, November 10. The stage show for the week has been named "Fall Follies," said to be a gay musical revue, sparkling with wit and melody. An imposing array of stage artists will be on the program with Eddie Conrad. Benny Meroff and his orchestra will preside over the show. A vitaphone talking picture and Fox movietone news will feature the week's program as usual.
