November 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Camp Fire Sparks The Winnetka Camp Fire Girls met as usual on Wednesday afternoon, November 14, in Community House. From Mrs. Philip Fisher's Litahni group comes the following report: "At our meeting this (Wednesday) afternoon we planned our meetings for the rest of the year. We intend to finish our headbands and ceremonial gowns at our meetings November 21 and November 28. We expect to earn Camp Craft and Nature honors at our meeting Decem- ber 5 December 12 we will have a cere- monial meeting. December 19 will be given to plans for our Christmas activities. (Signed) Eleanor Anderson (Reporter)" Mrs. Winscott's and Miss Adams' group did some tie-dying for Christ- mas gifts. Mrs. Hutchinson's new group elected its officers, and planned its November programs. Miss Olson's group planned its Christmas activity, and its Saturday hike. Winnetka Camp Fire Girls have be- gun their year's work--they have had hikes, out-of-door suppers, work meet- ings, social fun and evening par- ties, and are planning their year's pro- gram, and their special Christmas ac- tivities for others. A Camp Fire Girl belongs to an army of girls all around the world who do things. "Give Service" is the slogan of the organization. "Wohelo" is the watchword, (a word made from the first two letters of the words Work, Health, and Love). All of Camp Fire work is based on the ex- pansion of these three ideas. We are sometimes asked "What is Camp Fire?" It is a program for the young girl from eleven to sixteen years which seeks to train girls for fine woman- hood through the doing of and interest in the simple, natural and joyous things of life; and through service, the seek- ing of beauty in everyday life, and the doing of things, to help the young girl to grow toward the highest ideals. It stresses the out-of-doors and the home, has a fine health program, and encour- ages skill in the doing of daily simple tasks. It is a habit-building and char- acter-building program. It is full of color and symbolism. Its three ranks -- Woodgatherer, Firemaker, and Torchbearer--mark the successive steps in the girl's develop- ment, and are gained only after the girl has successfully fulfilled certain definite requirements. It takes at least three years for a girl to win all of these ranks, and the Torchbearer's rank involves the leadership of a group of younger girls. Camp Fire Girls work in small groups--from six to sixteen girls in a group, under a leader or "Guardian." Those leading in this work at present are: Mrs. J. M. Winscott, Mrs. Philip Fisher, Mrs. Paul Hutchinson, Miss Mildred Olson, Miss Dorothy Prouty, Miss Katherine Adams, Miss Mar- garet Washburne. Mrs. E. W. Wortley is general chairman. The girls meet each Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock in Community House. Any girl eleven years of age or over is eligible to join, and is invited to come. Mrs. Gordon L. Pirie, 945 Sheridan road, left last Wednesday for a short trip east. She met her sister, Mrs. John H. Quinlan of New York and they are attending the Yale-Princeton game today. G.L.ZICK & CO.
