According to S. W. Straus and Com- pany which has completed a survey of the metropolitan area, the building for forty-one suburbs for the month of October amounted to $8,156,858. Building in the suburbs generally amounted to approximately the same volume in October as in October, 1927, with the exception of Gary which, for the second time in the last few months, has materially reduced the volume of building in the Chicago area because of losses in its own building construc- tion program. While Kenilworth "had a compar- atively small volume its gain was phenomenal with a percentage of in- crease in October as against the same month last year of 15216 per cent. Whiting was the next largest in point of gain with an increase of 1015 but Whiting's volume, on which this per- centage was built, was small being only $5,700 in October last year. Wilmette showed a reduction in building from October, 1927, while Win- netka and Gencoe showed moderate gains. The gains for last month over the same month a year ago were principally made in the smaller suburbs. Oak Park, Joliet and Evanston all showed losses with Waukegan, Elgin, Ham- mond and Cicero as the larger suburbs showing gains. Aurora was practically even with last year. The October gains in the suburbs were as follows: Arlington Heights 458 percent, Batavia 590 percent, percent, Gllen Ellyn 1 percent, Harvey 38 percent, Hinsdale 93 percent, Kenil- worth 15216 percent, La Grange 324 percent, Mount Prospect 21 percent, Park Ridge 28 per cent, River Forest 299 percent, Waukegan 28 percent, Winnetka 32 percent, Hammond 29 percent and Whiting 1015 percent. Coach Hawley to Appear in Radio Talk Nov. 23 Five hundred gallons of New Eng- land rum have a unique place in the traditions of Dartmouth, for it was on the basis of this potent beverage that Eleazar Wheelock turned a neat edu- cational deal with the Indians and founded the college. This and other Dartmouth traditions will be related by Jess Hawley, Dart- mouth coach, and former Wilmette re- sident, over WMAQ, Friday night, November 23, from 10:25 to 10:35 o'clock as part of the second annual Dartmouth Pow Wow at Chicago. This year the Pow Wow precedes the game played by Dartmouth and Northwest- ern university, Saturday, November 24. Kenilworth Home, Garden Club Sees "Mum" Show The Home and Garden club of Ken- ilworth met on Monday of this week, with twenty-five members present, and after a luncheon at the Illinois Wom- en's Athletic club, attended the chrysanthemum show now being held at the Stevens hotel. The report of the gorgeous flower display is most en- thusiastic, great masses of blooms of innumerable varieties presenting a magnificent sight. Mrs. Theodore Moritz is president of this club.
