in S-- November 17, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 57 SEEK WINNETKA QUOTA IN BOY SCOUT BUDGET District Committee Sends Out Letters Requesting Contributions The Winnetka District committee, Boy Scouts, in a letter mailed yesterday to Winnetka householders, requested contributions to the quota of this vil- lage for the annual expense budget of the north shore area council. Win- netka has been a part of the council since July, but the financial year dates from December 1. The letter follows: "Fathers and friends of Winnetka Scouts--This is your chance to do something for the Boy Scouts. Will vou listen a minute? Here goes. "We've had Boy Scouts in this town for 18 years, organized by Chief Davies back in 1910. Hundreds of Winnetka boys have gained by that training at Community House. "Today there are seven troupes here, including one at Sacred Heart church in Hubbard Woods, and one at Christ church. We need help in getting the most out of scouting for our boys, and in getting more boys into the Scouts. "So we've joined the north shore area scout council, organized two years ago, of which all the towns except Winnetka, from Wilmette to Lake Forest, were members. They told us we'd get a lot out of it; but they need our help, too. You can read what the council means, and what it does, inside this letter. But-- "Here's where you come in:--The council is helping us mow. We are part of it. We want to pay our way. "Our share in Winnetka for 1928-29 is $2750. The other tcwns are raising their quotas right now. As a father or friend of Winnetka Boy Scouts, we ask your subscription to this work. "Will you mail your check or pledge card to the undersigned, if possible before November 257" "Yours for more and better Boy Scouts, Harold D. Hill, Chairman Finance Committee." This letter is also signed by the other members of the committee, including Glen C. Bull, George B. Calkins, W. B. Cormany, C. C. Daughaday, F. A. De- Peyster, Sherman M. Goble, C. J. Eastman, Vic J. During that time they re- sponded to ten calls, five each day. They also received two calls on Tues- day. For the fifteen days ending Thursday evening the department had made fifteen runs. None of the fires were of a serious nature, however. The first call Thursday was received at 12:30 a. m., from 1427 Scott avenue. The fire there was in a child's play house on a vacant lot. At 12:30 p. m. they were called to 693 Walden road to extinguish a grass fire, and five minutes after that call was received the other engine was sent to 844 Bryant avenue to extinguish another grass fire. At 2:15 p. m. the department was called to the residence of M. E. Weil, 272 Poplar street, to extinguish a fire in the roof, caused from a spark from an incinerator, and an hour later they following in the morning from ten to twelve.
